ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is a world-leading centre for research at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Key Duties & Responsibilities

As a Graduate RF Engineer working in the ISIS Accelerator Technology Division, you will work alongside experienced electronics engineers, physicists and software developers in the Low Level RF (LLRF) team responsible for designing, operating and maintaining the RF control systems for both the synchrotron and linear accelerator (linac) at ISIS.

These systems ensure precise and reliable beam acceleration by managing and regulating high-frequency electric fields inside accelerator cavities. You will work alongside experienced engineers and physicists to:

  • Design, test and commission electronics for feedback and feed forward control systems.
  • Implement signal processing techniques for RF waveform shaping and beam stability using LabVIEW FPGA.
  • Develop diagnostics and monitoring tools to maintain system performance.
  • Work with system upgrades to improve availability, flexibility and efficiency.
  • Participate in fault-finding and reactive maintenance as part of the operations team.
  • Collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams spanning accelerator operations, diagnostics, controls, and high-voltage systems.

You will also receive technical and professional development support through STFC’s graduate programme, which includes:

  • Mentoring from senior engineers.
  • Technical training in relevant electronics, RF systems and control theory.
  • Structured support toward achieving chartered status.

  • Achieved, or be on course to achieve, a minimum 2:1 degree, in a relevant field of study
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK at time of starting employment
  • Strong understanding of analogue and digital circuit design and signal processing
  • Effective communication
  • Collaboration experience through academic or extracurricular projects (S&I)
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Familiarity with key concepts in electromagnetism, RF or control theory
