Trainee Mechanical Fitter

Salary - £31,200 per annum

Hours - Monday-Friday, 07:00-15:30 | 40 hours per week

Location - Kempston, Bedford

Contract - Permanent, full-time

We are recruiting for a Trainee Mechanical Fitter to join an established specialist engineering business in Kempston, Bedford. This is an excellent opportunity for someone practical and mechanically minded who wants to build a long-term engineering career.

About the Company

Our client provides specialist engineering services and process technologies for the water and wastewater sector, supporting utility, food and beverage and industrial customers across the UK and Ireland. They design, manufacture, install and commission treatment systems using in-house engineering, fabrication and project delivery teams.

You do not need to be a fully qualified Mechanical Fitter. We are looking for someone hands‑on, mechanically minded and keen to learn. Experience in engineering, manufacturing, automotive, maintenance, assembly or a workshop environment would be useful.

The Role

Working alongside experienced Mechanical Fitters, Fabricators and Workshop Team Leaders, you will receive practical training in the assembly, preparation, installation and maintenance of mechanical equipment and fabricated products. The role is initially workshop-based, with site experience available as your skills and qualifications develop.

• Assist experienced Mechanical Fitters with mechanical assembly and fitting.
• Support the preparation, installation and removal of mechanical equipment.
• Use hand tools, power tools and workshop equipment safely.
• Assist with cutting, drilling, measuring and preparation of materials.
• Learn to read and understand engineering drawings.
• Support inspection, maintenance and repair activities.
• Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.
• Undertake relevant training and qualifications as required.

What We're Looking For

• A genuine interest in mechanical engineering, fitting or maintenance.
• Good practical and mechanical aptitude.
• Some experience using hand or power tools.
• A hands‑on approach and good attention to detail.
• Experience within engineering, manufacturing, automotive, maintenance, assembly or fabrication would be advantageous.
• An engineering or mechanical qualification would be beneficial but is not essential.

Salary, Hours & Benefits

• Salary: £31,200 per annum.
• Working hours: Monday-Friday, 07:00-15:30, 40 hours per week.
• Pension: company contribution of 3%; employee minimum contribution of 4%. Eligibility to join after 3 months employment.
• Holiday: 25 days annual leave plus statutory holidays, rising by 1 day for every 3 years of service to a maximum of 30 days.
• Life Assurance: 3 times annual salary.
• Paycare medical benefit after 3 months employment.
