Steward (https://getsteward.ai/) is a VC-backed startup on a mission to simplify the complex world of investor onboarding and AML using AI. We handle the real-world mess: discretionary trusts, hybrid partnerships, offshore jurisdictions, layered ownership, and ongoing monitoring - so compliance teams can move faster without losing defensibility. We’re building the system of record for onboarding and ongoing AML workflows across asset managers, private wealth, brokers and banks.
Mission of the Role
As a Compliance Associate at Steward, you’ll work closely with Product, Engineering, and Customer teams to embed strong AML and financial crime controls into our platform and our internal operations. Your work will directly impact how asset managers, private wealth firms, brokers, and banks onboard investors safely and efficiently.
What you’ll do day to day:
- Own and evolve Steward’s AML, KYC, and financial crime compliance framework
- Translate regulatory requirements into practical, scalable workflows within the product
- Review and advise on complex ownership structures (trusts, partnerships, offshore entities, layered ownership)
- Support customer onboarding by providing compliance expertise and guidance on edge cases
- Partner with Product and Engineering to design defensible controls, monitoring logic, and escalation paths
- Stay on top of regulatory developments across AML, sanctions, and financial crime, and assess their impact on Steward and our customers
- Contribute to audits, risk assessments, and external stakeholder discussions as needed
What you bring:
- 3-7+ years of experience in AML, financial crime compliance, or risk roles within financial services, fintech, or regulated environments
- Strong practical knowledge of AML/KYC regulations, sanctions, and customer due diligence requirements
- Hands-on experience reviewing complex customer structures and higher-risk cases
- Ability to interpret regulation and apply it pragmatically, not just theoretically
- Experience working cross-functionally with non-compliance teams (e.g. Product, Tech, Operations)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. You can explain complex topics clearly
- Experience in wealth management, asset management, brokerage, or private banking
- Exposure to transaction monitoring, ongoing due diligence, or financial crime investigations
- Background in a high-growth startup or scale-up environment
What you get:
- Learn: Work directly with the CEO & founding team (operator-led, high tempo, high ownership).
- Comp: Competitive base + equity (we want builders, not passengers).
- Office: 5 days in the office in Paddington, London. We believe the best companies are built in the room.
