The purpose of the role is to supervise the day-to-day Drawing Office activities, including staffing, in the compilation of detailed engineering drawings and models to meet customer specifications. You will ensure that suitable processes are developed to control all data and information. Accuracy of builds, adopting DFM techniques, is critical.

General Duties

  • Always look after the company’s interests.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality on all matters relating to company business.
  • Ensure that the company’s procedures are always followed.
  • Observe and promote all safe working practices.

Specific Duties

  • Ensure robust processes and procedures are maintained within the Aylesbury site, always adopting best practice.
  • Ensure that adequately trained and competent capacity exists to fulfil all drawing office requirements.
  • Plan and schedule all work in line with agreed timescales and manage the resources available to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Create both 3D and 2D models and drawings (as required) that meet build requirements within timescales and budgets.
  • Ensure operators check their own work and take responsibility for errors and omissions, including the construction of BOMs.
  • Utilise the CAD system to identify any errors for build adopting, Design for Manufacture.
  • Create drawings in line with general engineering practices, adhering to BS8888 (geometrical tolerancing and engineering) standards or any other applicable or customer-driven specifications.
  • Implement detailed design reviews as required with relevant team members in line with procedures to effect a prompt and detailed handover to Production.
  • Manage the EPDM system, ensuring that revision and issue control are maintained utilising a drawing and data vault.
  • Ensure detailed product libraries are used within SolidWorks in line with part numbering systems.
  • Reduce and simplify the quantity of drawings being produced to a lean state.
  • Ensure the transmittal note system for the issuing of drawings and data, both internally and externally, when releasing/handing over to Production, works effectively.
  • Ensure that all drawing and BOM changes are controlled through the relevant ECN procedures and that these are actioned before the despatch of product to ensure that the design data remains current.
  • Report on key performance indicators that determine effectiveness but especially concentrate on OTD (on-time delivery) of drawings and RFT (right-first-time release).
  • Initiate cost reduction improvements whenever possible.
  • Liaise with all relevant disciplines within the company and, in particular, with Production, on all aspects of designs to ensure that output is appropriate to the efficient and accurate production of equipment.
  • Maintain detailed design standards for the build and construction of all product types.
  • Assist the technical department with any R&D activities as deemed necessary.

  • Planning and production of mechanical engineering drawings and associated documentation within specified times and with minimum problems at all stages.
  • Continuous improvement of Drawing Office output in terms of accuracy and effectiveness.
  • A coordinated approach to production processes between Engineering and Production departments.
  • Drawings and BOMs produced comply with all relevant specifications.

  • Equipment: Principally SolidWorks 3-D CAD, EPDM, Epicor and Microsoft Office software. Computers and printers/photocopiers/scanners available as required.
