Based at our site in Cramlington, Northumberland, the Process Safety Engineer plays a key role in ensuring the safety of our process operations on plant. Reporting to the Process Safety Manager, you will actively participate in and track hazard reviews and process safety risk assessments, providing expert technical input and practical guidance to support safe, reliable, and compliant operations. This is a full-time, site-based position working Monday to Friday.
Responsibilities
- Support compliance with Control of Major Accident Hazards 2015 (COMAH) Regulations, the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations 2002 (DSEAR), ATEX and the process safety management system, updating sections of the COMAH Safety Report.
- Support the major accident hazard identification and risk assessment processes, including the Haz 0-7 study processes and others where appropriate, e.g. Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Safety Integrity Levels (SIL), Occupied Buildings Risk Assessment (OBRA) etc.
- Process safety risk assessment input, which may involve contributing to the selection, installation and operation of equipment, inspection/maintenance considerations.
- Monitor compliance with the site Hazardous Substance Consent (HSC) in terms of substance volume tracking.
- Review and develop process safety relevant procedures and contribute to the creation/revision of other procedures as required.
- Involvement in the preparation and revision of permitting/licence documentation relevant to process safety such as the COMAH safety report, aspects of the EPR permit and hazardous substances consent issues, monitoring of improvement actions arising.
- Preparation for interventions with regulatory authorities such as HSE, Local Authority and EA as required.
- Conduct workplace inspections, audits and investigations as required.
- Represent EHS at engineering handovers and modification reviews, participating in design reviews on engineering flow diagrams.
- Investigate issues & topics, prepare and present investigation reports and suggest possible actions.
Key Skills and Competencies
- Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline e.g. chemical/process engineering (chartered membership of a relevant institution desirable).
- Safety qualification desirable, e.g. NEBOSH Certificate/Diploma (having or willing to work towards process safety qualification).
- Demonstrable experience in a manufacturing/production environment is desirable.
- Understanding and appreciation of major accident legislation such as COMAH, with ability to contribute to major accident hazard identification and risk assessment processes.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and help develop practical and proportionate solutions to process safety issues.
- Prioritisation and time-management skills to balance active and reactive workloads.
- Competent with IT systems, particularly Microsoft Office including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
