Main duties of the job

An Occupational Therapy Assistant at STEPS will be supporting the therapies team to deliver high quality, client-centered care. The role isn't just about helping individuals regain mobility and improve physical function; it is enhancing overall wellbeing by assisting with treatment sessions, preparing equipment, and providing encouragement throughout the rehabilitation process. Working as part of a collaborative clinical team, you will be ensuring that clients receive safe, effective, and compassionate support tailored to their needs.

Job responsibilities

  • To work under the supervision of the qualified Occupational Therapists.
  • To implement and monitor individual rehabilitation plans for our clients and provide suitable feedback to the Occupational Therapists and, where appropriate, other members of the Interdisciplinary team.
  • To directly assist the therapy staff in treating clients or to work independently with clients, under guidance of the Occupational Therapists.
  • To support the running of therapy groups and classes under direction of the therapy team.
  • To assist with administrative tasks as part of supporting with the running of the Occupational Therapy service.
  • To maintain and manage resources and stock for the service, under the guidance of the Occupational Therapy team.
  • To support clients into the community and events.
  • To drive the STEPS vehicles as required.
  • To prepare clients for treatment, ensuring a safe environment.
  • To support in the planning of a recurring enrichment program as part of an enrichment team.
  • To develop knowledge and skills in the use of technology and provide sessions with a range of technology for clients.
  • To carry out tasks required to maintain safety, cleanliness and tidiness of all areas.
  • To assist in carrying out procedures relating to the personal care and nutritional needs of clients and assist in dealing with emergencies as required.
  • To carry out manual handling techniques in line with STEPS manual handling policies.
  • To maintain accurate and contemporaneous notes according to STEPS standards.
  • To provide support and guidance to other members of the interdisciplinary team, including the Rehabilitation Assistants and student therapists.
  • To contribute to service development initiatives and promote high quality care for clients at all times.
  • To participate in training and development activities that are relevant to the job role.
  • To reflect on practice with peers and supervisors as part of personal and professional development.
  • To elevate issues as required following STEPS guidance and operating procedures.
  • To be compliant with the clinical governance requirements operating within STEPS procedures.
  • Work variable shift patterns between the hours of 7am-9pm (typically 7.5 hours days).

Person Specification

Experience
  • Experience working in health or social care settings.
  • Experience working in a rehabilitation setting.
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas; neuro/complex trauma/SCI.
  • Understanding of the role of Occupational Therapy.
  • IT experience including Microsoft Office packages.
  • Experience of working within governance frameworks e.g. clinical systems / data management / complaints untoward incidents.
  • Creative and innovative approach, inclusive and engaging approach to client care.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Excellent communicator both written and verbal / demonstrates excellent listening skills.
  • Able to form key working relationships with colleagues, understand the dynamics of interdisciplinary working.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable.
  • Ability to demonstrate an awareness of equality and diversity obligations when delivering care and also towards colleagues.
  • Experience in all following specialist areas of rehab neuro/complex trauma/SCI.
  • Experience of audit functions.
  • Demonstrable experience and working knowledge of the Data Protection Act.
Qualifications
  • Relevant degree i.e. Psychology, Health and social care.
  • Fluency in spoken English.
  • NVQ II in a relevant and related subject or demonstrable equivalent experience / qualification.
  • Full British driving licence.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide sponsorship for this post.
  • Experience driving WAV style vehicles.
