As the Neurologic Music Therapist (NMT) you will enable clients to regain independence and enhance their experience of therapy while part of the STEPS team. You will work collaboratively across disciplines, support colleagues, share knowledge, and keep the client at the centre of care. Success is measured by compassion, professionalism, and teamwork as well as clinical outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Deliver a high-quality, evidence-based Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) service to clients with diverse, complex presentations.
- Manage a defined caseload using specialist assessment and treatment approaches, including NMT principles and relevant Music Therapy approaches.
- Engage in regular clinical supervision, NMT professional development credits, and wider CPD to maintain standards in line with the NMT Academy, BAMT and HCPC.
- Contribute to the efficient running and development of the NMT service under guidance of the Lead NMT.
- Undertake initial assessments, reviews, and evaluation of therapy strategies for residential clients from admission to discharge.
- Utilise highly developed therapeutic skills to support rehabilitation for clients with a diverse range of neurological and complex trauma injuries.
- Involve clients and carers/family in the development and delivery of goals within the rehabilitation plan.
- Provide clinical leadership, support, and guidance to other team members.
- Adhere to and carry out individual client and departmental risk assessments.
- Communicate effectively with team members regarding client progress, including family and written reports to external bodies where appropriate.
- Act on and escalate issues as required following STEPS guidance and procedures; ensure compliance with clinical governance.
- Identify the need for audits and participate in clinical audits as directed.
- Lead on specific projects related to service delivery (e.g., quality programmes, education and training) and contribute to setting and monitoring practice standards.
- Be involved in and oversee team participation in Research and Development.
- Represent STEPS at conferences and events in line with our values.
- Communicate using varied styles that reflect STEPS values and behaviours; tailor communication to the abilities and preferences of clients and stakeholders.
- Develop effective relationships with clients, carers, STEPS team, suppliers, and others as required.
- Report to and seek approvals from the clinical director for areas of responsibility (policy development, financial management, performance).
- Identify training needs and contribute to training development and/or delivery as required.
- Supervise a nominated team group in line with the supervision process and contribute to training needs analysis and reporting to the clinical director.
- Support workforce planning as required; use resources responsibly and review stock/equipment needs with SMT feedback.

Person Specification
Essential
- Recognised postgraduate qualification in Music Therapy.
- Current HCPC registration as a Music Therapist.
- Neurologic Music Therapy trained; affiliated with the NMT Academy.
Desirable
- Full BAMT membership.
- MATADOC training.
- Leadership qualifications or short courses; training qualifications or experience in developing/training programmes.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience; experience with adults 16+ with complex neurological injuries and impairments.
- Experience delivering individual and group music therapy interventions in clinical settings; interdisciplinary team work.
- IT proficiency (Microsoft Office); governance, data management, and reporting experience.
- Ability to write complex reports for Board-level audiences; knowledge of the Data Protection Act; CPD evidence.
- Strong musical skills on at least one instrument/voice; knowledge of diverse music therapy approaches; ability to assess and set goals; strong communication skills.
- Creative, inclusive care; problem-solving; time management; adaptability.
Desirable Experience
- Experience facilitating joint sessions with other professionals; delivering training/workshops; supervising students; knowledge of music therapy outcome measures; MATADOC familiarity; audit/service evaluation/research exposure; use of music technology; experience with complex orthopedic injuries, PTSD, private sector; R&D involvement; reflective practice and CPD relevant to neuro-rehabilitation.
