Role Overview

We are looking for teachers who are fun, approachable, professional, and passionate about working with children. As a Stepping Stones swimming teacher, you will be responsible for delivering our learn to swim framework to swimmers typically aged between 3 years and 11 years old. Lessons are delivered in small groups with a maximum ratio of 1:6, allowing teachers to build strong relationships with swimmers and families. Our teachers work hard to build trust and consistency within their classes, and it is our vision that every teacher becomes both a mentor and role model for their swimmers. All lessons are delivered from within the water and teachers are expected to create a positive, engaging, and supportive lesson environment. Our core lesson delivery falls during afternoons and weekends, with a range of venues and lesson times available across East Lothian.

If you are not currently qualified and would like to find out more about becoming a swimming teacher, ask us about our training and development pathway to help you begin your career in swimming instruction.

Main Duties

  • Safe delivery of swimming lessons following the Stepping Stones framework
  • Supporting swimmers through the learn to swim programme
  • Maintaining strong swimmer engagement and confidence
  • Assessment of swimmers for the Stepping Stones awards programme
  • Completion of registers and swimmer progress updates
  • Communication and feedback to the Stepping Stones office where required

Qualifications

Essential:

  • National Governing Body Swimming Teacher Qualification
  • SSTQ | STA | ASA | UKCC equivalent

Desirable:

  • NRASTC, STA Safety Award or NPLQ qualification

Personal Qualities

We encourage our swimming teachers to be friendly, approachable, energetic, and adaptable. As a Stepping Stones teacher, you should be able to recognise the needs of individual swimmers and adjust your approach depending on the child. Some swimmers respond best to energy and motivation, while others require a more patient and supportive approach. Above all else, we want our lessons to be fun. We have always believed that swimmers engage best when their teacher is genuinely enjoying the lesson delivery as well. If you are a confident and enthusiastic swimming teacher looking to join a growing programme, we would love to hear from you.
