Are you passionate about Mathematics or English and eager to inspire the next generation? Do you want to gain meaningful classroom experience before progressing into teacher training? At Step Into Teaching, we are working in partnership with a welcoming secondary school in York to recruit enthusiastic Maths and English graduates for Graduate Academic Mentor roles starting in September 2026. This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring teachers to build hands-on experience within a supportive school environment while making a real impact on students’ learning and progress.

The Role

  • As a Graduate Academic Mentor, you will support students across the school through:
    • Small group intervention sessions
    • 1:1 academic support
    • Classroom assistance alongside experienced teachers
    • Helping students build confidence and engagement in Maths or English
    • Supporting pupils with varying learning needs and abilities

You will become an integral part of the school community while developing the skills and experience needed for a future career in education.

Role Details

  • Graduate Academic Mentor – Maths or English
  • Secondary school based in York
  • Full-time position, Monday to Friday
  • Term-time only
  • £500–£530 per week (term time only)
  • September 2026 – July 2027 placement
  • Fantastic preparation for PGCE, Schools Direct, or teacher training pathways

Ideal Candidate

  • A Maths, English, or related degree with a 2:2 or above
  • Passionate about education and supporting young people
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Considering a future career in teaching
  • Previous experience working with young people is desirable but not essential
