At StepChange, our Payroll Team plays a crucial role in ensuring every colleague is paid correctly and on time. We are seeking a Payroll Technician to provide essential support across payroll and pensions processes. This is an opportunity to join a team that underpins the smooth running of our charity, helping us deliver financial wellbeing to thousands of people every year.
What You’ll Do
- Manage employee changes such as new starters, leavers and contract amendments.
- Calculate pay adjustments including overtime, statutory entitlements and deductions.
- Administer benefits like season tickets, holiday purchase, cycle-to-work and childcare vouchers.
- Review and balance payroll, prepare journals for the accounting system, and ensure all work is completed within the set timetable.
- Respond promptly to payroll queries via email, phone or face-to-face.
- Support colleagues in accessing e-payslips and maintain accurate payroll records.
- Deliver pension communications in line with legislation and provide guidance to employees when required.
- Carry out general administration and adhere to policies and FCA conduct rules.
About You
- Up-to-date knowledge of HMRC regulations and experience working in a payroll department of similar size and complexity.
- Highly numerate, able to meet strict deadlines, and confident using Excel, Word, Outlook and payroll systems such as Moorepay.
- Strong communication skills, self-motivation and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- An understanding of basic accounting principles and a payroll qualification would be advantageous, but not essential.
