Are you ready to play a key role in shaping and implementing a robust data protection framework? Can you bring your expertise to support our Data Protection Officer and lead critical assurance projects? Do you want to make a meaningful impact as part of StepChange’s Data Protection Team? Join our small but dedicated Data Protection Team as a Data Protection Business Partner and play a pivotal role in safeguarding the integrity of our organisation.

You will work closely with the rest of the team to design, deliver, promote, and manage a structured data protection framework, ensuring compliance across StepChange Debt Charity and its subsidiaries. This role also offers the opportunity to lead on key projects, addressing internal audit requirements and driving assurance-led actions that make a lasting impact. What you’ll do:

  • As a member of our Data Protection Team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the organisation’s compliance with data protection legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Investigate and assess data protection risk events and escalate serious issues.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to respond to data protection rights requests, handle client and colleague complaints, and support reporting requirements to regulatory bodies such as the ICO.
  • Offer valuable advice on assessments, onboarding new suppliers, being a subject matter expert on projects, and managing data-sharing arrangements.
  • Contribute to the strategic development of our data protection framework, including drafting and reviewing policies, driving improvements through our data protection plan, and creating awareness initiatives.
  • Provide governance support by compiling statistics, conducting reviews, and contributing to governance papers.

About you:

  • We’re looking for someone with a strong background in providing expert data protection advice and working within a data protection team.
  • Qualifications like the BCS Data Protection Practitioner Certificate or IAPP’s CIPP/E Certificate are preferred, but relevant experience is equally valued.
  • Experience in FCA-regulated environments, charities, or other regulated settings, and the ability to independently lead compliance projects will set you apart.
  • Strong technical skills in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the ability to understand complex regulatory and legal challenges are essential.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills—negotiation, influencing, relationship management—and empathy for the challenges faced by clients and colleagues are equally important.
