Overview
The UK Government has established UK Industrial Fusion Solutions (UKIFS) Ltd, a subsidiary of UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), to lead the charge in delivering fusion energy through design and delivery of the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) prototype fusion plant. UKIFS is establishing itself, setting up the company, attracting talent, engaging with industry, developing a supply chain, and planning and constructing of the STEP prototype. Fusion energy, crucial for combating climate change and ensuring energy independence, is expected to be commercially viable by mid-century. The UK, led by UKIFS, aims for a prototype fusion plant, targeting first operations around 2040. UK Industrial Fusion Solutions Ltd. will lead delivery, collaborating with industrial partners and building a fusion supply chain with an estimated global sector value of £7tn per year. Role and Location
This position is based at West Burton, Nottinghamshire and onsite working is expected for 3 days each week. The salary for this role is £62,858. There are multiple headcounts for this vacancy.
Responsibilities
- Lead the successful delivery of projects or major workstreams within the programme, ensuring objectives are defined and achieved within time, cost, and quality constraints.
- Work across multiple projects simultaneously, collaborating with diverse stakeholders from technical delivery teams to senior leadership to ensure outputs are delivered and benefits realised.
- Drive project delivery in alignment with UK Government standards and best practices.
- Lead teams and coach others to build capability and maintain quality.
- Manage budgets and negotiate decisions to keep projects on track.
- Influence and engage internal and external partners, including universities, suppliers, and professional networks.
- Identify opportunities for improvement and shape innovative solutions.
Accountabilities include:
- Create and lead the project to deliver agreed outcomes within time, cost and quality constraints; day-to-day management and leadership of the project and project team; provide effective leadership and management controls; design the project structure and organisation appropriate to the project stage; use industry-standard delivery methodologies; develop and track the budget; manage transition between project phases and transition to business as usual; develop and draft the Business Case with input from specialists; deliver the agreed Business Case benefits and outcomes; ensure Benefits Realisation strategy and monitor longer-term delivery; identify skill requirements and deploy resources; manage stakeholder relationships and internal/external relationships; identify and monitor risks and issues and implement mitigations; support governance and timely reporting; engage with assurance reviews; organise stage gate reviews as required; ensure Change Management; cascade vision into delivery objectives; develop and maintain the Project Plan and Project Controls; manage performance and report progress to sponsors; provide support, guidance and coaching for the project team and promote development.
Budget responsibilities
The job holder will manage the assigned budget allocation of typical budget expenditure of greater than £10m per annum; track invoices and project expenditure against the budget; identify forecasted under or overspend early and propose solutions through appropriate governance structures.

Essential Skills and Experience
- Proven track record of leading a variety of complicated (L5) or complex (L6) projects.
- Ability to engage successfully with diverse groups of stakeholders.
- Experience working in a multi-disciplined environment, managing projects that impact across multiple business areas.
Desirable Experience
- Experience of projects using agile or hybrid delivery methodology.
- Experience of working on science/engineering related projects.
- Experience of working within a wider programme of deliverables.
- Experience of public sector procurement would be an advantage.
- Honours/Masters degree in programme and project management or a degree in a relevant science or engineering discipline.
