Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Recall to work in Emergency situations – post subject to recall outside rostered shift patterns.)

Location: Environmental Services, Addenbrooke's Hospital, the Rosie Hospital, Cambridge

Reporting to: Lead Engineer

Job Summary: As well as core specialist skill, the Mechanical Craftsperson will perform complex and non‑routine work, including instilling, maintaining, servicing and repairing a full range of estates services equipment, providing technical advice to maintainers, contractors and ensuring compliance with safety standards and procedures. Responsibilities also include calibration, fault finding and repair of a wide range of engineering plant and equipment such as standby generators, heating systems, Boiler house / Hospital Incinerators and other hospital plant.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Understand, diagnose and repair faults in electrical or mechanical engineering plant and equipment, dealing with new situations as they arise.
  • Re‑assemble, erect and install new work.
  • Understand the workings of all non‑specialist and specialist electrical or mechanical systems in Addenbrooke's Hospital and associated properties, and competently deal with new or unusual complex situations.
  • Work in isolation or as part of a team to complete tasks within agreed timescales, ensuring patient, public and staff safety is paramount.
  • Participate in essential training required to ensure the Trust is compliant with statutory regulations; participate in personal development and ongoing learning.
  • Provide and receive complex technical information regarding safety requirements to staff, customers and contractors.
  • Coordinate with engineering managerial staff regarding plant or equipment failures and request supplies as necessary.
  • Undertake essential repair works and general maintenance activities at the request of the Engineering Supervisor.
  • Cover for Shift Technicians in times of sickness or annual leave following suitable site training.
  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance inspections and commissioning tests in accordance with Maintenance Manuals and Trust procedures; plan and organize complex activities such as shutdowns and interruptions to power supplies.
  • Follow detailed engineering drawings and specifications; use all relevant tools and testing instruments within safety guidelines.
  • Perform research & development activities such as condition surveys and acceptance testing of new equipment.
  • Undertake shift cover as appropriate within the Incinerator / Boilerhouse.

Additional Training & Qualifications:

  • Additional BTEC level training required to maintain, fault find and repair specialist plant and equipment (Authorised/Competent person, Confined spaces, Working at height, Pressure Systems).
  • Must obtain within three months of appointment: Safe use of ladders and steps; Use of radio communication system; Manual Handling; Customer Service Skills; Diversity within Customer Service Excellence.

Health and Safety:

Post holder must ensure all duties are carried out to the highest standard, in accordance with current quality initiatives. Any other duties which may be required from time to time as service demands dictate.

Management Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with departmental managers and users regarding equipment status.
  • Actively participate in the operation of the Addenbrooke's Maintenance Management System, completing all paperwork (job dockets, timesheets).
  • Train and instruct new employees on specialist hospital plant and equipment as part of induction, providing knowledge to others.
  • Supervise maintenance assistants and contractors, checking and evaluating works carried out.
  • Interpret and follow department and Trust policies and all relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Manage own workload within defined parameters.
  • Implement policies and actively contribute to policy development.

Administration:

  • Liaise with Engineering Supervisor regarding plant or equipment failures and request goods/services.
  • Update worksheets, job tickets, and PPM worksheets.
  • Raise breakdown jobs via the Addenbrooke's Maintenance Management System.
  • Complete plant and equipment report sheets and test certificates following planned maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure data quality and compliance with Trust policies, procedures and accountability arrangements for accurate recording of Trust activities.

Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with external professional bodies and partner organisations.
  • Support inter‑relationship between various maintenance crafts.
  • Concentrate on fault‑finding, inspections and interruptions for emergencies.
  • Work on wards and in theatres where patient contact may occur.
  • Deal with unpleasant conditions such as chemicals, gases, sewage and bodily fluids.

  • Comply with all Trust Policies and Procedures (Risk Management, Health & Safety, Information Governance, Confidentiality, Data Quality, Freedom of Information, Equal Opportunities, No Smoking, Being Open).
  • Comply with infection prevention and control policies and hand hygiene requirements.
  • Adhere to Trust Security policies and ensure a safe environment for care.
  • Maintain data quality and confidentiality in line with the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR.
  • Follow child protection and safeguarding policies if the post requires working with children or vulnerable adults, including DSBS disclosure.
  • Participate in annual Appraisal and Development Review, ensuring Trust Performance Standard is met.
  • Perform any other duties that may be required from time to time.

Recruitment Process:

Essential criteria: BTEC HNC/HND/Approved Apprenticeship, City and Guilds, NVQ III Technician Certificate, or equivalent; understanding and qualification to work on pressure systems.

Desirable criteria: Qualification and experience in Control Systems.

Experience: Work in industrial environment, Electrical/Mechanical Services Systems Maintenance, post‑apprenticeship hospital maintenance, mechanical systems evaluation, problem solving.

Knowledge: Electrical/Mechanical Services and Control Systems, UPS, IPS, generator standby power systems, hospital equipment, steam and cooling systems.

Skills: Quality electrical or mechanical work, fault finding, installation and maintenance, administrative duties, communication, teamwork, standing in for Supervisor, job ticket issuance.

Additional requirements: Behave consistently with Trust values of Safe, Kind, Excellent; handle hazards such as heights, isolation, confined spaces, manual handling, skin irritants, electrical wiring, shift work, extreme temperatures.

Terms and Conditions of Employment:

Pay is governed by NHS Terms and Conditions of Service Handbook; entry PAY will be at minimum point unless exceptional experience. Full‑time is 37.5 hours per week; part‑time salary is pro‑rata. Annual leave entitlement varies by years of NHS service (0‑5 years: 202.5 hrs; 5‑10 years: 217.5 hrs; over 10 years: 247.5 hrs). Employees automatically enrolled into the NHS Pension Scheme.
