Overview

Responsibilities

  • Work in collaboration with the subject lecturing staff and assessors, under the direction of the Learning Support Manager, or their delegate, within a wide variety of learning environments and situations.
  • Support students to access these curriculums both within and outside of a classroom environment including: reading out of materials, note taking, word processing, using enabling technologies, definition of language and other metacognitive skills.
  • Empower young people to achieve their personalised learning outcomes, including Education, Health and Care Plan outcomes and targets.
  • Adaptation of class resources in order to ensure students are able to access learning materials, i.e. enlarging text, modifying carrier language, etc.
  • Promote independence and empower students to make progress towards their achievement and champion learning support and inclusion.
  • Provide support outside the formal classroom setting e.g. at breaks, lunch, and on pre-arranged trips where needed and the delivery of study programmes off the college campus.
  • Maintain records in accordance with the support guidelines relating to student attendance, target-setting and progression and ensure daily Pro-monitor records reflects the support provided.
  • Attend and contribute effectively to team meetings and focus on learning support improvements.
  • Support students with the delivery of therapy interventions e.g. Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy following guidance and programmes set out by appropriate professional.
  • To work directly with young people to review their support needs, following the internal college processes.
  • At the invitation of the Learning Support Manager attend statutory annual reviews meetings with parents and/or external key workers of individual students as required.
  • Undertake appropriate training and development as agreed with the Learning Support Manager.
  • Assist colleagues to identify students’ support needs, e.g.: expressing concerns over a student’s welfare (i.e. safeguarding concerns), referring students to learner services, etc., making recommendations for best ways in which to differentiate materials.
  • You are liable to undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required of you commensurate with your grade at your initial place of work or at any other College site.

Special conditions and working arrangements

This post is defined as regulated activity. The postholder is required to hold an enhanced DBS disclosure check deemed acceptable to the College and to be rechecked every 4 years. All appointments are subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks, including a satisfactory Enhanced criminal records with Barred List check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Terms and Conditions

  • Salary Scale: APT&C Scale 4
  • Salary: (to be pro-rated if part-time) £21,355 per annum (actual) £24,577 per annum FTE
  • Superannuation Scheme: Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Hours: 37 hours per week
  • Contract: Fixed term until July 2026
  • Location: Cambridge
  • Annual Leave Entitlement: Holiday entitlement is incorporated into the annual salary.

  • General education GCSE English and Maths or equivalent at grade C or 4
  • Level 2 Learning Support Qualification or working towards
  • Working with Dyslexia qualifications
  • Qualification in Moving and Handling/ Assisting People to Move
  • Related Experience
  • Recent and demonstrable experience of supporting with people with special education needs.
  • Recent and demonstrable experience of working with young people and adults from a variety of age ranges within an FE setting or other institution (education, healthcare, social services)
  • Recent experience of sighted-guiding
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • High level of sensitivity. To operate with empathy.
  • Ability to motivate
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Computer literate
  • Able to work independently using own initiative
  • Ability to note take for students
  • Familiarity with digital assisted technology
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
