As a key member of the Operations department, the Manufacturing Engineer will work closely with both engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure the successful production of complex electro‑mechanical biomedical instruments and GMP product consumables. You will play a critical role in managing the transition of product designs into manufacturable processes, while ensuring compliance with ISO 13485 standards for medical devices. The role focuses on optimising production processes and facilitating collaboration across teams to support efficient, high‑quality manufacturing in a controlled environment.

Objectives and Responsibilities:

  • Project Management: Lead the introduction of new products into production, while also implementing improvements for existing designs and processes.
  • Process Development: Innovate and optimise manufacturing processes by studying product requirements, researching new methods, and working with equipment suppliers. Continuously test and modify processes to enhance efficiency and scalability.
  • Quality Assurance: Design and implement robust testing methods to ensure both product and process quality. Establish production standards and verify that manufacturing processes meet these standards.
  • Efficiency Optimization: Analyze and improve workflow, space utilisation, and equipment layout to boost manufacturing efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Cost and Resource Management: Provide insights into production costs, labour, and material requirements. Evaluate production schedules and anticipate future demands to ensure readiness.
  • Make vs. Buy Decisions: Assess whether key complex components should be manufactured in‑house or outsourced, providing support on either option.
  • Supplier Management: Support the purchasing team in managing key supplier relationships and evaluating supplier capabilities.
  • Supply Chain Enhancement: Work with the purchasing team to improve the R&D supply chain, ensuring a smooth handover of products from development to manufacturing. Collaborate with the Operations Manager to ensure seamless integration of new and existing products into production.

Essential Job Criteria:

  • HNC/HND in engineering or manufacturing field or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • Multi‑disciplinary background with an electrical/electronic bias.
  • Confident at reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Experience in instrument optics and lasers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Methodical and precise work approach.
  • Efficient management of a varied workload.
  • Excellent team player.
  • Proactive with the ability to take ownership of tasks.
  • Strong problem‑solving abilities.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience in manufacturing complex electro‑mechanical devices, preferably within an ISO 13485 environment.
  • Strong project management skills with a track record of successfully introducing new products into a production setting.
  • Proven ability to develop and optimise manufacturing processes, including experience with quality assurance and efficiency improvement.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills, with the ability to make data‑driven decisions regarding production methods and supplier strategies.

The annual salary for this job ranges from: £33,000.00 – £49,600.00. STEMCELL determines an individual’s pay within the range based on multiple factors including experience, education, job‑related skills, and equity within the team or organisation. For jobs that are eligible for sales incentives, the range noted above is inclusive of target incentives; actual incentives are based on individual performance results in accordance with company policy. In addition to base salary, STEMCELL offers a comprehensive total rewards package that may include health benefits, retirement savings, and more (depending on region).
