  • Description

Stem Health is reimagining the primary care experience for individuals who want a more thoughtful relationship with their health.

Physician-led and membership-based, we combine medical excellence with the warmth of hospitality anchored in a beautifully designed flagship clinic at First Canadian Place, opening September 2026.

Our care model is relationship-based, data-informed, and built on time, trust, and exceptional service.

Position Summary

Every experience a Stem Health member has booking an appointment, receiving their health results, navigating their care journey is shaped by the software we build.

The same is true for every clinician who coordinates care, every administrator who manages the day, and every operator who keeps the clinic running.

At Stem Health, technology is not a support function.

It is how we deliver on our promise.

We are looking for a Full Stack Developer to join our technology team and take end-to-end ownership of the products and systems that power Stem Health.

You will design, build, and maintain features across our member-facing applications, internal clinical tools, third-party integrations, and operational platforms working closely with our Applied AI Engineer, product team, and clinical and operations stakeholders to deliver software that is fast, reliable, and genuinely useful.

This is a high-ownership role in a small, building-mode team.

You will be one of the primary engineers shaping Stem Health's technical foundation making architectural decisions that matter, shipping code that gets used, and helping set the engineering standard as the company grows.

Key Responsibilities

  • Product and feature development
  • Design and deliver full-stack features across Stem Health's core product surfaces including the member portal, onboarding flows, appointment scheduling, care coordination tools, health dashboards, and internal clinical and operational interfaces.
  • Own features from requirements and design to implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing iteration maintaining full technical accountability for the code you ship.
  • Collaborate with the product and design team to translate member and clinician needs into clean, performant, well-considered software.
  • Write front-end code in Java Script and HTML that is fast, accessible, and consistent with Stem Health's design system and back-end code in Ruby on Rails that is well-structured, testable, and built to last.
  • Systems integration and API development
  • Build and maintain integrations between Stem Health's platform and external systems including EHR/EMR platforms, diagnostic lab providers, scheduling tools, payment processors, communication services, and insurance or benefits APIs.
  • Design and develop RESTful and Graph QL APIs that are secure, well-documented, and built for reliability at production scale.
  • Own the data layer: design schemas, manage migrations, optimize queries, and ensure data flows accurately and securely across the full system.
  • Build and maintain webhook consumers, event-driven workflows, and background processing pipelines that keep the platform responsive and operationally sound.
  • Infrastructure and Dev Ops
  • Manage and improve Stem Health's cloud infrastructure including deployment pipelines, environment configuration, monitoring, alerting, and incident response across staging and production environments.
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD workflows that support fast, confident deployments with appropriate automated testing and rollback capabilities.
  • Ensure the platform meets the performance, availability, and reliability standards appropriate for a healthcare environment, with particular attention to data security, access control, and PHIPA compliance.
  • Manage infrastructure costs and resource configuration proactively, ensuring the technical stack scales efficiently as the membership and team grows.
  • AI integration and intelligent tooling
  • Collaborate with the Applied AI Engineer to integrate AI-powered features into the platform including LLM-based interfaces, retrieval-augmented search, workflow automation, and intelligent decision-support tools.
  • Build the production infrastructure that makes AI features reliable, observable, and maintainable over time including logging, evaluation hooks, rate limiting, and graceful fallback handling.
  • Contribute engineering judgment on where AI can meaningfully improve product experiences, and where conventional software is the right tool.
  • Code quality and engineering culture
  • Write clean, well-tested, well-documented code and actively maintain the quality of the shared codebase through thoughtful code review and refactoring.
  • Define and uphold engineering standards coding conventions, testing requirements, deployment practices, and documentation expectations that enable the team to move quickly without accumulating technical debt.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions with a practical, long-term perspective: build what the business needs today in a way that does not constrain what it needs tomorrow.
  • Mentor junior engineers and interns, providing constructive code review and engineering guidance that raises the capability of the whole team.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in full-stack web development, with a proven track record of shipping production-quality applications end to end.
  • Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails including MVC architecture, Active Record, RESTful routing, background jobs, and Rails best practices for building maintainable, scalable web applications.
  • Strong proficiency in Java Script (ES6+) for front-end interactivity, including experience with modern JS frameworks or libraries (Stimulus, Hotwire/Turbo, React, or equivalent); solid command of HTML5 and semantic markup.
  • Experience designing and managing relational databases (Postgre SQL or My SQL preferred), including schema design, query optimization, and migrations.
  • Solid experience with cloud infrastructure AWS, GCP, or Azure including compute, storage, networking, managed services, and IAM.
  • Proficiency with CI/CD tooling, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes or equivalent), and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Experience building and consuming RESTful and/or Graph QL APIs, including third-party integrations with complex external systems.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML integration patterns, LLM APIs, vector databases, embedding pipelines, RAG architectures is a significant asset.
  • Experience working in a healthcare, health tech, or regulated data environment with working knowledge of PHIPA, HIPAA, or equivalent privacy and security standards is highly valued.
  • Experience with EHR/EMR systems, clinical workflow platforms, or health data standards (HL7, FHIR) is a strong asset.
  • Exceptional communication skills: you write clearly, explain technical decisions accessibly, and collaborate effectively with non-technical stakeholders.
  • A product-minded engineering approach: you think about the user and the outcome, not just the implementation.
  • Ideal Candidate

You are an engineer who takes genuine ownership of the features you build, the systems you maintain, and the codebase you share with your team.

You move with purpose: comfortable making decisions with incomplete information, rigorous about the things that cannot be compromised, and pragmatic about the things that can.

You understand that building software in a healthcare environment is not just a technical challenge it is a responsibility and that standard shapes how you approach security, privacy, reliability, and correctness.

You want to build something that matters, and you want to build it properly.

  • Why Join Stem Health
  • A foundational engineering role at an early-stage, physician-led healthcare company launching at First Canadian Place in September 2026 the opportunity to shape the technical architecture and culture from the ground up.
  • High ownership, high impact: your architectural decisions will define how Stem Health operates at scale, and your code will directly shape what members and clinicians experience every day.
  • A small, building-mode team where your contributions are visible, valued, and consequential not abstracted behind layers of process.
  • The chance to work at the intersection of healthcare, AI, and product engineering building technology that has real clinical and human stakes.
  • Competitive compensation, meaningful equity participation, and the professional growth that comes with being a senior engineer at an ambitious, early-stage company.
