About the position:
Our client is a growing specialist lender looking for an experienced Mortgage Underwriter to join their team. They are open to considering candidates with either second charge or residential mortgage underwriting experience, making this an excellent opportunity for an underwriter looking to develop their specialist lending experience. You will be responsible for assessing mortgage applications, making lending decisions within the company's risk appetite and managing cases through to completion, while building strong relationships with broker partners and other key stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Underwrite applications in line with company policy, underwriting criteria and risk appetite
- Assess borrower circumstances, affordability, supporting documentation and overall credit risk to make sound lending decisions
- Manage a pipeline of cases from application through to completion
- Provide clear, concise and accurate updates to brokers throughout the underwriting process
- Proactively liaise with brokers to obtain outstanding information and documentation
- Ensure all case information and underwriting decisions are accurately recorded on the relevant systems
- Build and maintain strong relationships with mortgage brokers, solicitors and third-party suppliers
- Work closely with internal teams to ensure cases progress efficiently and within agreed timescales
- Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with FCA regulation, company policy, responsible lending and risk requirements
- Maintain high levels of service while managing a busy caseload and working to deadlines
Experience and skills required:
- Proven manual underwriting experience within a mortgage lender, with experience holding an underwriting mandate/delegated authority
- Experience underwriting second charge and/or residential mortgage applications, with strong credit assessment and lending judgement
- Good understanding of FCA regulation, responsible lending and risk requirements, with strong attention to detail and the ability to make sound lending decisions
