The Transport Manager is responsible for overseeing the efficient and compliant operation of the transport function within the company. This role includes ensuring all vehicles, drivers, and transport operations meet legal requirements and company standards, whilst maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction and cost efficiency. The Transport Manager will oversee vehicle maintenance, drivers’ hours management, fleet operations, and the application and compliance of operator’s licences. Legislative Compliance & Transport Regulations: Ensure full compliance with UK transport legislation, including the Road Traffic Act 1988 , The Road Transport (Working Time) Regulations 2005 , and The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 . Ensure adherence to the Operator’s Licence conditions, ensuring that the company holds the appropriate licences for all vehicles used in transport operations. Monitor changes in road transport laws and regulations and implement necessary adjustments to practices. Ensure regular audits of transport operations to confirm compliance with both internal policies and external regulations. Oversee driver scheduling, ensuring full compliance with legal working hours and rest periods in line with the Driver’s Hours Regulations and EU Tachograph Rules . Coordinate driver training programmes, ensuring that drivers are familiar with regulatory changes and health and safety practices. Manage driver recruitment, induction, training, and performance management. Handle disciplinary matters and ensure all drivers adhere to company policies and regulations Maintain accurate records to support audits by regulatory bodies such as the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). Liaise with regulatory authorities to address any concerns or compliance issues related to the Operator’s Licence. Fleet Maintenance and Planning: Oversee the maintenance and repair of all company vehicles to ensure they meet both safety standards and legal requirements. Develop and implement a preventive maintenance schedule for vehicles, ensuring regular inspections, servicing, and MOT checks are conducted on time. Monitor fleet performance and recommend the purchase or disposal of vehicles, ensuring that the fleet is cost-effective and meets operational needs. Ensure that all vehicles are insured, taxed, and certified in accordance with relevant legislation. Develop strategies to maximise fleet efficiency and reduce downtime, including the scheduling of routine inspections and repairs. Prepare and manage the transport budget, ensuring that costs related to fuel, maintenance, staffing, and other transport activities are kept within budgetary constraints. Monitor fuel consumption and explore ways to reduce fuel costs through improved route planning and vehicle optimisation. Route Planning and Logistics: Develop and optimise delivery schedules and routes to ensure timely and cost-effective service delivery, while complying with driver hours regulations. Coordinate with other departments (such as warehousing and customer service) to ensure that transport operations align with broader company objectives. Use technology and transport management software to plan and monitor the efficiency of the transport network. Ensure that all transport operations are carried out in line with health and safety regulations, conducting regular safety audits and implementing corrective actions where necessary. Implement driver safety training programs, including the management of driver risk assessments and regular safety briefings. Prepare and present regular reports on fleet performance, driver compliance, maintenance schedules, and any incidents or accidents to senior management. Ensure accurate and up-to-date records are maintained for all transport activities, including vehicle maintenance, drivers\’ hours, and incident reports. Maintain records for financial audits and ensure all paperwork is filed in accordance with company policies and legal requirements. Ensure that transport services are aligned with customer requirements and that customer expectations regarding delivery times and service standards are met. Resolve any transport-related customer complaints or issues, working proactively to improve customer satisfaction. Lead, manage, and develop a team of transport coordinators, drivers, and logistics staff. Implement performance management processes for the transport team, ensuring that staff are motivated, trained, and working to their full potential. Full UK driving licence. CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) for Transport Managers. Extensive knowledge of transport legislation, including Driver\’s Hours Regulations and EU/UK Tachograph Rules . Knowledge of vehicle maintenance and fleet management. Experience in managing large fleets and/or transport operations. Understanding of Health & Safety regulations and their application in transport operations. Degree or qualification in logistics, transport management, or a related field. Experience in route planning software or transport management systems. Knowledge of environmental regulations related to transport operations. Previous experience in a similar transport management role.
