Class Teachers

Drumduan is a modern and progressive Steiner School located in the beautiful North-East of Scotland overlooking Findhorn Bay and the Moray Firth, with an emphasis on experiential education, nature connection, and the creativity that flows from children being given the space to develop in a low technology school environment. The school currently has students from Kindergarten to Class 12 in the Upper School with teaching and non-teaching staff. Our school operates with a collective decision-making structure, the college of staff, at its centre. The Coordination Group aims to coordinate the running of the school to best support its pedagogical purpose and with heed to its financial sustainability. In addition, there are School Development Groups (SDG) that are formed to hold fundraising initiatives together with the Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA). The Operations Team works closely with the SDG.

Drumduan School is looking for a skilled, enthusiastic, dedicated and experienced class teacher starting August 2025 to hold this key role at the heart of the school's teaching activities. The successful applicant will be responsible for the teaching and pastoral care of a class as it grows and develops. Experience of combined age groups is preferable, and knowledge of Steiner Education pedagogical principles and Waldorf teaching experience are desirable. We particularly welcome applications from candidates who can offer other subjects alongside class teaching.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide a balanced curriculum appropriate to the children's age and development, based on Waldorf pedagogy/child development, and explore innovative educational practices locally and globally.
• Ensure sound teaching of literacy and numeracy aligned with pedagogical principles.
• Nurture the healthy development of children's physical, social, emotional, and cognitive capacities, understanding their strengths and weaknesses to tailor work accordingly.
• Engage in pedagogical study/discussion and child observation with colleagues, proactively addressing areas of concern or need.
• Undertake necessary preparation, study, and training to deliver the curriculum effectively and support the school's ethos and principles.
• Work collaboratively with parents, organizing and presenting Parent Evenings and individual consultations, including Home Visits when needed.
• Lead and inspire children, maintaining discipline and boundaries warmly, fostering confidence and effective learning.
• Develop children's perseverance, curiosity, problem-solving skills, and good work habits.
• Liaise with subject teachers, learning support, and curative staff; facilitate class screening when appropriate.
• Adhere to the school's Assessment Policy, aiming to improve teaching and learning based on children's needs.
• Prepare the class for festivals and plays, supporting subject teachers as needed.
• Organize and participate in outings, trips, and events.
• Maintain records, pupil files, and document conversations with parents and professionals.
• Write pupil reports in line with school practice and collate with subject teachers' reports.
• Participate in the admissions process for new pupils.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Seek assistance from experienced colleagues or specialists when necessary.
• Work with a mentor during the first year, as appointed by the School Coordination Team.
• Participate in performance appraisal and peer observation.
• Organize materials, liaise with responsible staff for purchases, and monitor budgets.
• Attend staff meetings, out-of-hours meetings, inset days, and training days.
• Participate in school events during holidays or weekends as required.
• Adhere to school policies, including Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety.
• Cover for absent colleagues when able, including supply teaching.
• Supervise pupils during non-class hours within the school day.
• You may be asked to teach other subjects or classes.
