Monday – Thursday, 07:00 - 16:00 & Friday, 07:30 - 12:30 (39 hours per week, office based).

Steelway Brickhouse, based in West Bromwich, is a key division of the business, producing precision-engineered access covers & frames for use across the Water, Sewer, Telecommunications, Power, Rail, Domestic, Industrial, & Commercial markets – using mild steel, stainless steel, & aluminium.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced CAD Designer to join our busy design team in West Bromwich. This role is ideal for someone with exceptional attention to detail, a proactive mindset, and the ability to work independently - driving continuous improvement and positive change where needed. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in producing high-quality drawings and 3D models for a wide range of bespoke steelwork projects, including security access covers, lift-off hatches, and fencing systems. Reporting to the Technical Manager, you will be responsible for producing design layouts, general arrangements & complete manufacturing drawings, developing new products, & improving existing product lines.
Responsibilities
- Utilise previous industry experience & knowledge to produce detailed fabrication drawings & 3D models using AutoCAD or Autodesk Inventor.
- Generate bills of materials (BOMs) & ensure accuracy in parts lists.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, sales & marketing, the client, architect & structural engineers to gather critical information & specifications.
- Attend internal & external project design meetings offering valuable input to improving current designs.
- Ensure all designs comply with project specifications, tolerances, & quality standards.
- Support junior members of the team & contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes.
- Actively participate as a designer on NPD & project work.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role within a sheet metal fabrication environment (preferably in access cover/roof hatch design & fabrication).
- Advanced user of AutoCAD & Autodesk Inventor with strong 3D modelling & assembly design skills.
- In-depth understanding of steel & sheet metal design principles, fabrication methods, & manufacturing processes & constraints.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance innovation, practicality, & compliance.
- Comprehensive understanding of technical drawings & specifications.
- IT Proficient with Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software & parametric modelling would be advantageous.
- Able to work full time hours at our design office, 5 days per week.
