Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Design Engineer to play a key role in the development of innovative hardware systems from concept through to production. This is an exciting opportunity for a capable and driven engineer with at least five years’ industry experience to take ownership of complex designs, influence technical direction, and contribute directly to cutting‑edge projects.

The Role

As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the design and development of ruggedised hardware systems, ensuring technical excellence, compliance, and delivery to programme milestones.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of mechanical and/or electronic hardware systems from concept to validation and production
  • Produce and review detailed design documentation, 3D models, technical drawings, and specifications
  • Perform design calculations, simulations, and tolerance analysis
  • Ensure designs meet environmental, EMC, and relevant industry standards
  • Manage design reviews and technical evaluations, presenting findings to internal stakeholders and customers
  • Work closely with cross‑functional teams including manufacturing, supply chain, and quality
  • Liaise with external suppliers and partners to ensure technical compliance and performance
  • Drive continuous improvement in design processes, reliability, and cost optimisation

Minimum Requirements

  • 5+ years’ experience in a Design Engineer or similar hardware development role
  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, or Systems Engineering
  • Proven experience designing products for harsh or regulated environments (e.g., defence, rail, industrial, aerospace)
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical integration principles
  • Experience producing detailed technical documentation and engineering drawings
  • Proficiency in CAD tools such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD
  • Understanding of EMC considerations and environmental compliance standards
  • Ability to manage technical tasks independently and take ownership of deliverables
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage confidently with stakeholders
  • Experience designing ruggedised or mission‑critical systems
  • Familiarity with industry standards relevant to defence or transport sectors
  • Experience supporting product validation, environmental testing, and certification
  • Knowledge of thermal management, power systems, or embedded computing integration
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers
  • Exposure to full product lifecycle management from concept to production
