Steamship Mutual is a leading Protection and Indemnity (P&I) insurance provider with a global workforce of 250 employees. Our head office is based near Liverpool Street station in London, with offices in Bermuda, Brazil, Cyprus, Greece, Hong Kong, New York, Japan, and Singapore.

We are looking for two highly motivated university graduates to begin a career in claims within the marine insurance sector. As a mutual P&I Club, we insure shipowners and charterers all around the world. While our main office is in London, our presence in major shipping centres enables us to support Members regionally in close collaboration with our London teams.

As part of our claims team, you will be responsible for handling a wide range of claims for our Members. We provide legal and strategic support of the highest standard, drawing on significant in-house expertise. Because we insure liabilities, we often find ourselves participating in and directing complex litigation and arbitration in London and many other jurisdictions worldwide, working alongside external lawyers and technical experts.

Service is at the heart of what we do, and you will play an integral role in promoting and sustaining relationships between the Club and our Members. As a new recruit, you will rotate through each of the three London-based claims teams, spending six months with each, gaining exposure to our Members across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. To ensure you get a well-rounded understanding of P&I insurance, you will also spend time with our Underwriting and Loss Prevention departments, as well as gaining insight into Reinsurance and Finance.

As part of your training, you will be expected to complete at least Modules 1 and 2 of the P&I qualification, the industry’s formal qualification. There will also be plenty of learning and development opportunities throughout the 18-month programme.

We are seeking graduates with a strong academic record, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a genuine interest in developing a career in insurance and shipping. No prior experience in marine insurance is required; what matters most is your potential. If you have earned your bachelor’s or master’s degree in a discipline that demonstrates the ability to communicate complex ideas in a concise and digestible way, such as law, history, English, Classics, or modern languages, you might be the perfect fit for us.

We are looking for individuals who are eager to learn, have a strong work ethic, and are driven to develop the skills needed for a successful career at Steamship. If you are a clear communicator, have an eye for detail, and enjoy collaborative problem-solving, you are already on the right path.

This is a fantastic opportunity to embark on a career in the world of international marine insurance. From day one, you will gain hands-on experience and valuable industry insight. You will work alongside experienced legal and claims professionals across global markets. This is more than just a job; it is the beginning of a challenging, rewarding, and long-term career. We are committed to supporting your development not only during the programme but throughout your career.

Our 18-month programme starts in Autumn 2026.

Joining our collaborative, supportive, and friendly working environment, you will enjoy a rewarding career with the opportunity to build on your existing skills and knowledge. We offer great work-life balance initiatives, including a competitive hybrid working policy, and a clear and transparent career pathway – offering you continued support with enhancing your skills and creating employment development opportunities.

We offer free educational access to the Protection & Indemnity Qualification, created by the International Group of P&I Clubs, and an attractive benefits package which includes private healthcare. We also provide a competitive health subsidy and access to our comprehensive wellbeing and savings programme throughout the year, to create an environment that supports everyone’s mental and physical health.
