Steamship Mutual is looking for two motivated university graduates interested in developing an underwriting career in a unique marine insurance sector. As a mutual Protection & Indemnity Club, Steamship insures shipowners and charterers from all around the World. A P&I underwriter’s role is to manage the key relationships with existing and prospective clients, as well to assess the risk each client brings and ensure a corresponding premium is charged.
Key Responsibilities
- Spend 6 months in each of the three London-based underwriting teams, learning about our clients in the Americas, Europe, and Asia and supporting the teams in performing their tasks.
- Time will also be spent with the Claims and Loss Prevention departments, as well as learning about reinsurance and finance.
- Complete at least modules 1 & 2 of the P&IQ, the industry’s formal qualification as part of the training.
Person Specification
- A bachelor’s degree is required; any subject is acceptable but mathematical, analytical, or modern language degrees may be more useful.
- Desire to learn and a motivation to work hard on the necessary skills to build a successful career.
- Demonstrates strong analytical thinking paired with clear, concise written and verbal communication.
- Shows a collaborative working style, with a positive attitude and enthusiasm for teamwork.
- Confident using Microsoft Office applications and comfortable working with databases.
