Ready to lead from the warehouse floor? Our client is looking for an experienced Night Operations Manager to take ownership of our night operation. This is a hands-on, warehouse-based role – not an office-based management position. You’ll be visible on the warehouse floor, working alongside and leading our warehouse team and drivers to keep a busy night operation running safely, efficiently and on time. From managing imports and exports to overseeing trunking, checking freight, coordinating drivers and ensuring the warehouse is operating safely, you’ll be at the heart of the operation.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leading and supporting the Warehouse Team and Drivers
  • Coordinating import and export activity throughout the night
  • Monitoring drivers, collections, airline queues and vehicle requirements
  • Debriefing returning drivers and escalating damages, UTLs and other operational issues
  • Organising transport and vehicle preloads
  • Carrying out quality, destination and paperwork checks
  • Overseeing the loading and unloading of trunk vehicles
  • Ensuring Dangerous Goods and damaged freight are handled and reported correctly
  • Making sure freight is labelled, located and processed accurately
  • Maintaining accurate records and traceability through WMS
  • Supervising safe working practices across the warehouse and yard
  • Ensuring PPE, forklift checks, site security and equipment procedures are followed
  • Maintaining high standards of compliance with CAA, HMRC and Company procedures

This is a hands-on role

Our client wants to be clear about what this position involves. You won’t be managing the night operation from behind a desk. You’ll be based in the warehouse and actively involved in the operation, supervising activity, checking freight and paperwork, supporting the team, resolving problems and making decisions as situations develop. Our client is looking for someone who enjoys being close to the operation and can lead by example.

What they’re looking for

  • Previous experience managing or supervising an airfreight warehouse team
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills
  • The confidence to make decisions independently during a busy night shift
  • A calm, organised approach when working under pressure
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and an approachable management style
  • Experience using warehouse management systems
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel

Relevant training or experience in Cargo Management, COSHH, IOSH, Manual Handling and cargo screening would be beneficial. Counterbalance and Reach Forklift experience/qualifications are also required for the role.

The person they’re looking for

You’re the type of manager who is comfortable rolling up your sleeves and getting involved. You can lead a team, keep multiple operational priorities moving at once and maintain high standards even when the pressure is on. You’ll know when to step in, when to delegate and when something needs escalating. Most importantly, you’ll understand that successful warehouse leadership comes from being present, visible and engaged with your team and the operation.

Interested? If you’re an experienced warehouse or operations leader looking for a hands-on Night Operations Manager position in Manchester, we’d like to hear from you. Apply today and help lead their night operations team.
