This role will be key to driving the comprehensive news agenda across our bespoke projects, betting content, live products and data-led Editorial services, impacting all areas of our written output. The Deputy Editor will ensure all our teams are producing the best data-led content ideas with engaging and dynamic storytelling, supporting the Senior Editor by having a direct involvement in the planning and production of our wide-ranging daily sports news and content services.
Their efforts will enable our production teams to create innovative data-led Editorial, betting, bespoke and live content. The Deputy Editor will write and edit data-led articles, as well as providing planning support across various bespoke editorial and betting projects, providing invaluable support to current client agreements and new areas of provision.
You will perform similar duties in supporting the Global Editorial team’s core data-led news feed and Live Text Commentary services across major sports like soccer, tennis, cricket and NBA. The Deputy Editor will help to drive the agenda for the entire service working alongside video, data, production and editorial leads to deliver high-quality content, powering syndication and bespoke content creation onwards to our diverse client base.
You will manage data journalists, coaching their development through the setting of clear goals and objectives with the Senior Editor. You will have a keen eye for detail, providing specific feedback to writers and overarching strategic support to review the effectiveness of content plans, projects and our third-party providers.
Supporting our training and development efforts, you will become an expert in company systems and data tools, passing that knowledge on to other teams and new recruits. You will also work closely with other News stakeholders and teams to drive synergies across the wider department and oversee your own specific areas of management responsibility as well as make sure direct reports are fully across all their responsibilities.
Reporting to the Senior Editor, the Deputy Editor will support with the quality control of our content; this will also include managing our worldwide network of freelance journalists. You will also be tasked with innovation of our workflows and processes to take Stats Perform News to the next level. In the absence of the Senior Editor, you will work with other managerial staff to lead the team, and in the event of major matches or news stories you will be one of the first to mobilize.
You provide integral administrative support to the Senior Editor in areas like rotas and planning coverage, as well as providing additional support for foreign language services. This wide-ranging role will include providing support to various Editorial and Video teams and products in gathering and interpreting sports data, as well representing the Editorial team in planning and strategy meetings to support our wider department.
Essential Required Qualifications:
- First-rate knowledge of a wide range of sports, including football, tennis, cricket and basketball.
- Willingness to work flexible shift patterns in line with the global sporting agenda, including regular evening and weekend work.
- Superb project management, planning and organisational skills.
- Exceptional communication skills, including an ability to engage with stakeholders across the organisation on different time zones and have oversight of content in multiple languages.
- Strong writing and sub editing skills with at least four years’ relevant experience as a written Editorial journalist.
- Minimum two years’ editorial/digital experience in a junior leadership role that included relevant managerial responsibilities in a similar sports journalism environment/content production team.
- An ability to drive engagement through creative writing and being comfortable working with data as a form of storytelling.
- Strong understanding of Editorial production workflows, including the gathering and interpretation of data to support the creation of unique content.
- Excellent editorial judgement, including knowledge of media law.
Desirable:
- A track record of writing or editing content in the betting and gaming areas.
- Additional language skills (e.g. French, Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian).
- Strong working knowledge of F1, Rugby Union and Golf.
- Evidence of planning long-term projects and delivering key deliverables for both B2C and B2B clients.
- Experience in creating high-quality and innovative video content for digital and social audiences.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant production systems, including Live technology and video cameras.
- Strong news sense and confidence in setting the daily agenda.
- Strong understanding of commercialising content, either in a B2B or B2C environment.
- Experience of working in an international/multi-regional organization.
