Sonographer

Main duties of the job include assessing patients prior to examination, determining the most appropriate ultrasound techniques, adapting examinations to meet individual clinical requirements, and exercising a high degree of clinical judgement in the acquisition, interpretation, and communication of findings. The post holder will work independently within their scope of practice, prioritising workload in response to clinical urgency and service demand, supporting efficient patient pathways across outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and specialist services.

The role includes responsibility for the provision of diagnostic ultrasound services across a range of examinations, including general medical, abdominal, pelvic, gynaecological, obstetric, DVT, and Small Parts as a minimum for the band 7 role. Candidates with additional PG Cert level qualification and experience in vascular and/or MSK Ultrasound will qualify for band 8a remuneration. The post holder will work four extended clinical days per week as part of the department's service delivery model.

Job responsibilities

• Responsibility for Patient/Service User Care: To undertake the assessment of patients/service users with complex needs including individuals with unconfirmed diagnosis. To develop, implement, and evaluate specialised programmes of care utilising evidence and research. To work autonomously, recognising changes in patients'/service users' presentation which require intervention.
• Communication: To build a therapeutic relationship with patients/service users and their support network, communicating with them in a way that respects their views, language, cultural differences, and cognitive function.

Qualifications

• Minimum Qualifications for Band 7: PG Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (minimum skillset - Abdominal, Obstetric, small parts, DVT & Gynaecological Ultrasound). HCPC registration or equivalent.
• Additional Qualification needed for Band 8a: PG Cert in Vascular and/or Musculoskeletal MSK Ultrasound.
