We are seeking a highly capable and forward‑thinking Senior Manager, Engineering to join our Technology leadership team at Skipton International. This is a pivotal role responsible for driving transformation and modernisation across our technology landscape. Reporting to the CIO, you will lead multiple engineering teams spanning software development, infrastructure, and cloud platforms. You will define and deliver a scalable, secure, and efficient technology environment that underpins our strategic ambitions. Working in close partnership with product, operations, security, and business stakeholders, you will translate business goals into robust, modern engineering solutions, ensuring high‑quality delivery, operational resilience, and continuous improvement. This role is based in Guernsey or Jersey and includes participation in key governance forums such as the Technical Design Authority and Change Committee.
Key Accountabilities
- Technology Strategy, Architecture & Design: Define and maintain a scalable, secure, and efficient IT architecture aligned to business strategy. Act as the authority on solution design, including application and supplier selection. Chair the Technical Design Authority (TDA), ensuring informed, evidence‑based decisions. Own the full technology lifecycle, from introduction through to retirement.
- Software Development & Delivery: Oversee the end‑to‑end engineering lifecycle (design, build, test, deploy and support). Establish and enhance engineering best practices (Agile, CI/CD, DevOps, automated testing). Ensure delivery roadmaps and release plans are realistic and aligned to business priorities.
- Backlog Management & Portfolio Planning: Own and govern development backlogs, ensuring prioritisation is clear and outcome‑focused. Manage dependencies and competing priorities across the technology landscape. Balance new feature development with technical debt, resilience, and lifecycle management.
- Infrastructure, Cloud & Hosting Strategy: Ensure platforms and infrastructure are reliable, scalable, secure, and cost‑effective. Develop and deliver an appropriate cloud and hosting strategy, including migrations. Optimise performance, availability, and cost (including cloud cost management/FinOps).
- Security, Compliance & Operational Resilience: Embed 'secure by design' and 'resilience by design' principles across all engineering activities. Define and maintain BCP and DR plans, ensuring alignment with RPO/RTO requirements. Ensure compliance with regulatory, data protection, and industry standards.
- Leadership, People & Culture: Lead, mentor, and develop engineering teams, fostering a high‑performance culture. Set clear objectives and accountability for delivery, quality, and service. Champion continuous improvement, innovation, and knowledge sharing. Influence senior stakeholders and communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
Requirements
Essential:
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
- Proven leadership of multi‑disciplinary engineering teams in complex environments.
- Strong experience in solution architecture and systems development management.
- Hands‑on experience with modern engineering practices (Agile, CI/CD, DevOps, cloud‑native).
- Demonstrable experience managing backlogs, roadmaps, and cross‑platform dependencies.
- Solid understanding of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and migration strategies.
- Strong knowledge of security, compliance, and operational resilience (BCP/DR, RPO/RTO).
- Experience in infrastructure and platform optimisation (performance, scalability, cost).
- Excellent stakeholder management and ability to communicate technical topics to non‑technical audiences.
- Proven people leadership, coaching, and team development capability.
Desirable:
- Professional certifications (e.g. cloud architect certifications, Agile/SAFe/Prince2 Agile, ITIL, COBIT).
- Security certifications (e.g. CISSP, CCSP).
- Experience in regulated sectors such as financial services.
- Knowledge of service management frameworks and their integration with DevOps.
