The States of Guernsey are looking for a Staff Nurse to join the Mignot Memorial Hospital in Alderney. MMH is a small country hospital with a total of 22 beds, including 14 long‐stay beds for island residents and 8 acute beds for short‐term admission, assessment and treatment. Patients whose needs cannot be met at MMH are transferred to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey and, on occasion, to Southampton. MMH also has a two-bed resuscitation and emergency care area that provides care to A&E attenders, both adults and children. The acute ward delivers care to patients with a wide range of acute, complex medical and occasionally surgical conditions. The Staff Nurse role is integral to the direct delivery of high‐quality nursing care, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care plans from admission to discharge. The role involves supporting and developing the professional skills of both registered and unregistered colleagues, coordinating the smooth running of the ward, and providing fundamental nursing care to permanent residents in the long‐stay area.

Responsibility for Patient / Service User Care:
- To assess, develop, implement and evaluate care plans demonstrating a high standard of evidence‐based care.
- Work autonomously, recognising changes in patients' or service users' presentations that require intervention and knowing when to escalate to senior staff.
- Guide, advise and direct other staff in the delivery of programmes of care.
- Support patients / service users in undertaking activities of daily living within care plans.
- Act as a health promoter and educator for patients / service users and their support networks.
- Report all accidents and incidents as per policy and participate in risk management and quality and safety processes (e.g., SWARM).
- Be accountable for ensuring that safeguards are in place for patients / service users and escalate any safety, safeguarding or risk concerns following the appropriate processes.
Communication:
- Build a therapeutic relationship with patients / service users and their support network, communicating in a way that respects their views and cognitive function.
- Use a wide range of communication skills that can be adapted to meet the needs of complex and challenging situations.
- Establish effective working relations with all members of the multi‐disciplinary team, relaying condition‐related information in a timely and effective manner.

Person Specification:
- Minimum qualification: Registered Nurse with the NMC.
- Full qualification to be achieved by second gateway (if required).
- Portfolio evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Minimum ILS/PILS course completed.
- Successful completion of practice assessor/supervisor course.
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of HSCs CARE values.
- Ability to plan and prioritise own workload and that of others.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to deal with complex and challenging situations in a calm and diplomatic manner.
- Ability to work autonomously and also as part of a multi‐disciplinary team.
