Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, serves in a leadership role performing a variety of maintenance and assisting administrative work activities while providing customer service in the operation of a recreational, historic or natural resource park; interprets natural features of the area, or historic objects/artifacts for visitors; and ensures public safety by enforcing Park rules and regulations.

Job Duties

  • Outdoor Recreation & Programs: Host visitors, help train staff and volunteers, conduct interpretive programs, and lead guided walks or hikes. Provide information in response to visitor questions, direction, guidance, and concerns. Update social media Facebook page and create interpretive videos to promote the park, nature, and conservation.
  • Customer Service: Provide customer service by phone, in‑person, or other methods to respond to public inquiries about park hours, accommodations, and reservations.
  • Cash Handling & Administrative Functions: Perform cashier duties at Contact Station/Gift Shop, run reports, collect and account for fees for park admission and store purchases/souvenir orders. Assist park management with day‑to‑day operation needs and serve as a designated lead when management is not available.
  • Public & Staff Safety: Promote the safety of park visitors, enforce park rules, protect park resources, utilize two‑way radio communications system, confer with local officials and law enforcement officers, complete all necessary reports concerning incidents. Assist park management with maintaining/inspecting park infrastructure and training implementation/development.
  • Maintenance: Serve as maintenance lead for park infrastructures and equipment. Oversee and train rangers on proper landscaping and other related maintenance techniques on park upkeep and preventative maintenance duties. Troubleshoot, repair and install restroom fixtures/toilets, build fences, perform trail maintenance, general plumbing, preventative maintenance, landscaping, minor electrical repairs/troubleshooting, oil changes/fluid maintenance of vehicles/equipment, and septic/water system maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services; park rules, fees and revenue functions; techniques for display and interpretation of objects/artifacts and general/natural resources to visitors; basic maintenance strategies, and general office procedures.

Skills include public relations and information dissemination; service orientation; critical thinking; active listening; driving and operating automotive equipment; basic curatorial techniques; natural resource management; basic maintenance troubleshooting, repair and preventative maintenance skillsets in areas such as landscaping, plumbing, electrical and general construction/building maintenance; multi‑tasking; and deescalation techniques.

Abilities include researching natural or historical information; performing math calculations; first aid techniques; oral and written communications; interpersonal relationships; performing basic maintenance repairs; deescalate upset or non‑compliant visitors; train new staff in policies and procedures.

Selective Preference(s)

Two years of experience equivalent to a Park Ranger Specialist or one year as a Park Ranger II, OR three years of work experience in customer service, maintenance in a park‑related setting; OR a Bachelor’s degree in Park Management, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field. Any combination of training and experience that meets knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted.

Pre‑Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Arizona Driver’s license appropriate to assignment.

Some positions may require certification as an Emergency Medical Technician, Electrician, and/or Wastewater Treatment Operator.

All newly hired State employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E‑Verify). If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job to conduct State business, driver’s license requirements apply.
