The Bookkeeper / Accounting Assistant is responsible for preparing and maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, managing day-to-day bookkeeping operations, and supporting financial reporting and decision-making. The role includes liaison with external accountants and auditors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Bookkeeping & Financial Operations
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records (general ledger, journals, and sub-ledgers)
  • Process accounts payable and receivable, including invoicing, credit control, and supplier payments
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts
  • Prepare and post month-end and year-end journals
  • Manage payroll processing and related filings (where applicable)
  • Reporting & Compliance
    • Assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts and financial reports
    • Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, tax regulations, and company policies
    • Prepare VAT returns and other statutory submissions
    • Assist with audits and provide required documentation
    • Support budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Systems & Controls
    • Maintain and improve bookkeeping systems and internal controls
    • Ensure data integrity within accounting software
    • Implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy

    Skills & Competencies

    • Technical Skills
    • Strong knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles
    • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage)
    • Advanced Excel or spreadsheet skills
    • Solid understanding of tax and compliance requirements

    Qualifications & Experience

    • Professional certification (e.g., AAT, ICB, CPA, ACCA – part-qualified)
    • Minimum 2 years bookkeeping or accounting experience

    Hours: Monday – Friday 8:30 to 5:00 and its office based– no hybrid

    Salary: £24,000 - £26,000 depending on age and experience. Fully qualified AAT level 4 up to £28,000
