Role Description

Role Purpose

To support the Underwriting division through defined administrative responsibilities, providing support within Underwriting Controls and utilise the Underwriting Authority granted, within the set parameters, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and Company standards. To write profitable business in line with the underwriting plan, using professional judgement to achieve the target premium revenue, return on premium and business growth and to operate in line with the Underwriting Manual, authorisation limits and general compliance/regulatory and Company procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake the Graduate Trainee Programme with the aim of becoming an Underwriter within a 2 year period achieving the industry recognised ACII professional qualification.
  • Develop an understanding of the technical underwriting principles and the operation of both Lloyds and company platforms and the identification and assessment of risk.
  • Develop an understanding of the Risk Engineering principles involved in Power & Process Industries. Create, update and manage Starr systems as appropriate. Evaluate and prepare quotes, renewals and policies. Triage new submissions from brokers.
  • Issue documentation in a timely manner. Ensure that the file is complete and contains all relevant documents. Obtain any outstanding items from the broker or underwriter in readiness for Peer Review.
  • Establish relationships with junior brokers, discuss policies and insurance coverages with the goal of helping clients manage their risk while protecting Starr’s bottom line. Interact with brokers with a view to securing new busines.
  • Attend client meetings, accompanied by an experienced member of the team.
  • Provide support to the team leader and other team members where required.
  • Perform any other duties which management may, from time to time, reasonably request.
  • Participate fully in the educational and scholarly activities of the training program as specified by the program, including attendance at conferences/seminars, and other responsibilities which includes a scholarly project deemed suitable for publication, completion of examinations, maintenance of procedure logs, or other items.
  • Learn about other areas of the business and how they work individually and in partnership with various underwriting teams.
