We have a hybrid approach to work here at Starling – our preference is that you’re located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we can interact and collaborate in person. In Technology, we’re asking that you attend the office a minimum of one day per week.

Starling engineers are excited about helping us deliver new features, regardless of the primary tech stack. We build our entire banking platform in Java, and we are looking for people who want to work on building the tooling used by our engineers on a daily basis. Our mobile engineers work in cross‑functional feature teams across broader engineering groups. As an Android engineer, you’ll be working in at least one of these teams. You are empowered to make decisions for the platform and provide insight to the team leads on such projects. You’ll also work closely with other Android engineers across experience levels and interests, helping us improve and develop our Android app, CI automations, and tooling. You’ll commit, review, and ship new code right from the first week.

As an Android engineer, you’ll report to and catch up regularly with a mobile lead engineer who will support your journey at Starling. We expect you to understand and prioritise security when implementing new features, fixing bugs, or making technical improvements across all layers. We design, build, and release new screens every day – we’re interested in people with a particular focus on accessibility, and in writing clean, maintainable code. We aim to deliver stable, resilient, and high‑quality code; testing is another key quality we look for. We use Espresso to write UI/E2E tests and JUnit for unit tests across all application layers, and manually test all features before they go into production. We work closely with QA engineers to add an additional level of testing when delivering complex features.

Our Android application uses Kotlin, MVVM, RxJava, Dagger for dependency injection, and Realm for persistence. We work with the latest tech and evaluate choices based on product and user value. We strive for feature parity with iOS, releasing app updates at least once a week. The release manager role is rotated within the Android team, and we automate as much of the release process as possible, using internal tooling for uploading to app stores and managing rollouts.

Our interviews are conversational and designed to allow you to get to know us, as much as you get to know us. Expect the following:

  • Initial interview with an engineer
  • Take‑home tech test
  • Live coding
  • Tech interview
  • Final interview

Benefits:

  • 25 days holiday (plus your public holiday allowance)
  • One extra day of holiday on your birthday
  • Annual leave increases with length of service, and you can buy or sell up to five extra days off
  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year
  • Salary sacrifice, company‑enhanced pension scheme
  • Life insurance at 4x your salary & group income protection
  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care; partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith, and Peloton
  • Generous family‑friendly policies
  • Referral program incentives
  • Perkbox membership providing retail discounts, wellness platform, and weekly free and boosted perks
  • Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work, Salary Sacrificed Gym partnerships, and Electric Vehicle leasing

We welcome people from all backgrounds and experiences. While we can’t accommodate every flexible‑working request, we’re always open to discussion. If you’re excited about working with us and are not yet 100% certain, get in touch anyway.

Starling Bank is an equal‑opportunity employer, and we foster diversity and inclusion. We consider all applicants without regard to race, religion, national origin, age, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, marital status, medical condition, ancestry, physical or mental disability, military or veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
