The Role

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Manchester-based water engineering team. You will be responsible for producing high-quality mechanical design solutions across a range of regulated water industry projects, from outline through to detailed design. The role offers the opportunity to work across both clean water and wastewater schemes, supporting multi-disciplinary project teams and contributing to technically complex infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce mechanical design deliverables that meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
  • Prepare mechanical design calculations, drawings, investigations, reports, and specifications
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant technical, professional, and group standards
  • Direct, support, and develop CAD technicians
  • Prepare scopes of work for subcontract M&E design teams and review their outputs
  • Liaise with equipment suppliers and manufacturers, prepare technical specifications, and review tender submissions
  • Manage and record design changes in line with formal processes and procedures
  • Estimate design hours and support project planning activities
  • Attend and present at design reviews, project meetings, and client presentations

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years mechanical design experience within the UK regulated water industry
  • Degree, HND, or equivalent experience (including progression from Technician level)
  • Strong IT skills and experience using engineering design tools
  • Registered with a relevant professional body and working towards Chartership

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards chartership)
  • Experience in hydraulic design
  • Experience delivering UMON schemes
  • Experience across clean water and wastewater, infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects
  • Awareness of construction methods, materials, and buildability
  • Strong knowledge of engineering drawing practices
