The Business Analyst is a key member of the Business Engagement Team within the IT Department. This role acts as a bridge between business departments and IT, ensuring that technology solutions are aligned to business strategy, and that IT delivery meets agreed requirements and outcomes.
The BA is responsible for capturing, analysing, and documenting business requirements, writing user stories for development teams, and supporting the identification of business process improvements. The role spans both Agile and Waterfall project methodologies and requires strong stakeholder engagement skills at all levels of the organisation.
Key Results Areas
- Engage directly with business stakeholders and subject matter experts to elicit, capture, and document both functional and non‑functional requirements.
- Facilitate structured workshops and interviews to gather business requirements and validate understanding across stakeholder groups.
- Translate complex business needs into clear, concise, and actionable requirements.
- Ensure requirements are sufficiently complete and consistent to support effective delivery applying a pragmatic approach that balances rigour with pace.
- Author well‑formed user stories and acceptance criteria that articulate business value for development teams working within Agile delivery frameworks.
- Work closely with product owners, developers, and testers to refine the backlog and ensure stories are ready for sprint planning.
- Support delivery teams during implementation to ensure that clarity and traceability between business requirements and delivered functionality is maintained.
- Work in partnership with the process team to review and document existing business processes using recognised modelling techniques.
- Identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement within current‑state processes.
- Support the design and recommendation of future‑state processes that deliver operational efficiency and business value.
- Support both Agile and Waterfall project methodologies, adapting approach and documentation standards accordingly.
- Assist in the development and review of business cases, providing analysis and evidence to support investment decisions.
- Contribute to project governance by monitoring scope, highlighting risks and issues, and ensuring delivery remains aligned to agreed objectives.
- Support the Business Engagement Manager with stewardship of IT projects to ensure business requirements, expected business outcomes are met, and scope is managed effectively by all parties.
Experience and Skills Required
- Proven experience as a Business Analyst in a technology or IT led environment.
- Strong experience in requirements gathering, analysis, and documentation (functional and non‑functional).
- Demonstrable experience writing user stories and acceptance criteria for Agile development teams.
- Confident and skilled in facilitating workshops and stakeholder engagement sessions.
- Experience working across both Agile (Scrum/Kanban) and Waterfall project methodologies.
- Ability to work with technical IT teams and translate technical concepts for non‑technical stakeholders.
- Experience engaging with third‑party suppliers and external partners.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce high‑quality documentation.
- Strong analytical thinking and structured problem‑solving capability.
- Extremely capable in most MS Products.
Desirable
- Experience within the Builders Merchant, Building Material Distribution or the Financial Sector.
- Exposure to business case development and investment appraisal.
- Commercially aware, with an understanding of cost, benefits and associated trade‑offs.
- BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis or equivalent professional qualification.
- Agile or Waterfall/PRINCE2 qualifications.
- Experience working in a Business Engagement or IT relationship management function.
- Familiarity with enterprise IT environments and common technology platforms.
- Familiarity with Jira and Confluence software.
