We are looking for a Future Programmes Engineer to work at ESA’s ECSAT premises in Harwell, United Kingdom.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to support the activities in the Telecommunication Satellite Domain for cutting-edge projects.
About the client and location
The European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Harwell, UK. With special focuses on the link between space and telecommunications, ECSAT also hosts ESA’s Earth Observation Climate Office. It is from here that ESA’s Climate Change Initiative programme is executed.
Tasks and activities
The scope of work will include:
- Support the assessment of the business environment evolution for satcom, terrestrial telecom and space and potential impact to the satcom key stakeholders.
- Support the identification and justification of selected business partners to focus on (as a combination of demand/partner pull and techno/industry push) using key criteria of relevance and impact for industry competitiveness and introduction of innovation.
- Support analysis of opportunities with the selected business partners, in some of the focus areas identified in business exploration (e.g. 5G, satellite constellations, artificial intelligence). The analysis must be based on structured action plans and result in justified roadmaps leading to further business consolidation actions.
- Support assessment of business, technological and operational requirements of SatCom networks (space and ground segments) and their integration with terrestrial wired and wireless networks in an end-to-end system context, with the aim of attracting and acquiring new partners.
- Support the preparation of action plans and development of roadmaps in close cooperation with relevant stakeholders (e.g. SatCom and terrestrial industry) in order to foster the use of innovative SatCom solutions.
- Assist with the promotion of the use of satellite communications and attract stakeholders to collaborate with ESA in implementing and demonstrating integrated end-to-end systems and services.
- Support in monitoring and assessing the need and commercial potential for future satellite telecommunication missions and systems.
- Support the analysis, definition, initiation and management of industrial activities associated to new projects in the telecommunication satellite system domain.
- Support the definition of all the elements end-to-end associated to the mission/system architecture of new telecommunication satellite projects/systems.
- Perform trade-offs between different concepts/technologies to optimize the end-to-end system. Support in the generation of procurement data packages (ITT, RFQ).
Skills and experience
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
- Master’s degree or equivalent in Physics or Engineering, or a relevant field, with at least 4 years of proven relevant experience.
- Expertise in and knowledge of business development in the European and international commercial space sector, including in institutional markets, and/or digital economy.
- Experience in change processes by adoption of new processes, opportunity management, investment schemes.
- Familiar with driving strategic engagement through international business partnerships between space, telecom or media and vertical markets (e.g. transport, energy, health, government, security).
- Broader business thinking, relationship management, ambassadorship, innovation and creativity.
- Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
- Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken. Knowledge of another ESA member-state language is an asset.
