Assistant Consultant at Starfish Search – Local Government Interim
Starfish Search are working with a local authority to recruit an Interim Monitoring Officer. This is a critical leadership opportunity to help shape and embed new ways of working as the council continues its journey. This is a key leadership position, offering the opportunity to shape new ways of working and ensure the highest standards of accountability and compliance across the council.
Operating at the heart of the organisation, this role reports directly to the Chief Executive and plays a pivotal part in advising both senior officers and elected members. The postholder will oversee core corporate functions, including Legal and Democratic Services, as well as Risk, Audit, and Assurance – covering key areas such as Health and Safety, Information Governance, and Insurance.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior-level advice on governance, compliance, and statutory duties to the Chief Executive and senior leadership
- Uphold the integrity of democratic processes and member-officer relations
- Lead and support improvement across a range of professional functions, ensuring services are aligned with the council’s strategic goals
- Foster good decision-making and promote a culture of accountability and transparency
- Contribute expert insight to support the organisation’s broader transformation and improvement agenda
About You
- A proven leader with a strong background in governance and compliance within a political or public sector setting
- Confident in working with senior stakeholders and elected representatives
- Able to offer strategic perspective and specialist advice within a complex organisational framework
- Capable of leading multi-disciplinary teams through change and improvement
- Legally qualified, or possessing equivalent experience in regulatory, compliance, or legal governance roles
This is an interim role, offered on a 6-month basis, with the expectation of 2 -3 days per week in the office in the Northwest.
