Starfish Search is supporting a local authority in the North to appoint an Interim Director of Education. This is a high-impact opportunity to lead the development of inclusive and aspirational education services across the borough, shaping early years, SEND, and wider education outcomes at a strategic level.

You’ll play a central role in leading system-wide transformation, working closely with schools, colleges, and partners to improve opportunities for children and young people, especially the most vulnerable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership across education, early years, inclusion, and SEND services.
  • Drive integration and improvement across Family Hubs, ensuring a strong start for every child.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with education providers, health, and local partners.
  • Represent the council regionally and nationally on education priorities and reforms.
  • Lead transformation programmes aligned with the council’s vision and values.

About You

  • A senior education leader with experience at director or assistant director level, ideally within a local authority setting.
  • Deep understanding of early years, education strategy, and inclusion policy.
  • Politically astute, with experience advising elected members and managing complex stakeholder environments.
  • Confident leading change, transformation, and system-wide collaboration.
  • Committed to improving outcomes for children, young people, and families.
