Ready to build world-class engineering systems in one of the most beautiful places on Earth ? Starboard Maritime Intelligence is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead our software teams and help build a world-class engineering machine in the heart of Wellington, New Zealand
This is your opportunity to relocate into a mission-driven company solving real-world international security and maritime challenges – where you’ll be a builder of teams and systems—driving excellence, pushing delivery forward, and putting in place the structures that allow great engineers to thrive.
You may be someone who’s already demonstrated strong technical and people leadership (perhaps as a Team Lead in a high-delivery environment), but is hungry for more: more impact, more ownership, and more pace. You’ve seen what “great” looks like in elite software environments. Now you’re ready to bring that standard to a company building some of the most compelling real-world tech in the South Pacific.
This role is based in our Wellington CBD office, and we offer a relocation package to make the move as smooth as possible.
In this role, you will
- Manage team capability, capacity, and performance, optimising resource allocation to ensure delivery;
- Lead, coach, and grow a cross-functional engineering team working across web development, infrastructure, machine learning, and platform;
- Drive hiring to attract and retain elite engineering talent;
- Propose and implement structures, systems, and processes that unlock excellence and delivery at scale;
- Set a high bar for quality, performance, and accountability, raising the game across the board;
- Build a team culture focused on ownership and sharp execution;
- Work closely with senior leadership to align engineering outcomes with product direction and company strategy.
What success looks like
- Your team becomes a delivery machine: fast, focused, and continuously improving;
- Engineers feel stretched, supported, and motivated to do their best work;
- Performance management is active and effective—standards are high and clear;
- You quickly become a force multiplier: identifying bottlenecks and opportunities, making bold changes, and moving the needle;
- Engineering culture becomes more systematic, ambitious, and aligned to strategic goals.
You will have
- Exposure to elite engineering cultures and a desire to bring that quality to a new domain, ideally in the defence technology sector;
- Direct people management experience (5+ engineers minimum) in a high-calibre software environment;
- A strong technical foundation, with broad knowledge across modern software stacks;
- Hands-on programming experience in Go, Python, or a systems language such as C, C++, or Rust;
- A clear desire to build a career in engineering management..
This role is for you if
- You love building systems and teams that consistently deliver;
- You’re energised by taking things from good to great – and fast;
- You get deep satisfaction from seeing engineers thrive under strong leadership;
- You live in OR want to relocate to Wellington, New Zealand, and make a long-term commitment to a high-growth mission.
- Experience at companies such as Palantir, SpaceX, Anduril, and Helsing is highly desirable.
The offer
- Base salary + KiwiSaver (pension fund) + bonus – above market for the right candidate;
- Employee stock options ESOP;
- A team hungry to level up and the space to shape how we get there.
At Starboard, we build cutting-edge software that empowers the defence, intelligence, and commercial sectors with actionable intelligence. We’re a passionate team driven by innovation, creating scalable platforms that solve complex challenges at sea and beyond.
This is your opportunity to join a mission-driven organisation where technology meets real-world impact.
