Discover a more connected career. The Drill Locator is a critical member of the underground utility crew here at North Sky. You will be responsible for tracking the drill head during horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations, ensuring the bore path follows the engineered plans and avoids existing underground utilities (gas, water, electric, fiber).

What you’ll do:

  • Precision Tracking: Use electronic walk-over tracking systems to monitor the depth, pitch, and position of the drill head in real-time.
  • Crew Coordination: Provide constant, clear communication to the Drill Operator via hand signals or two-way radio to guide steering adjustments.
  • Utility Safety: Verify all existing "call-before-you-dig" (811) marks and "pothole" sensitive utilities to prevent strikes and ensure safe clearance.
  • Bore Path Planning: Read and interpret blue prints and utility maps to determine the most efficient and safe path for the bore.
  • Site Documentation: Maintain accurate bore logs, including depth readings and rod counts, to provide "as-built" documentation upon completion.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure tracking electronics are calibrated daily and maintain drill bits, beacons, and batteries.
  • Misc: Dig lightly with a shovel when necessary, work overtime, travel, and perform on-call/afterhours responsibilities as needed, perform work in all weather conditions.

What you’ll need:

  • Age/Status: To be 18 years of age or older, authorization to work in the United States for this company and High School Diploma, GED equivalent, or relevant work experience.
  • Experience: Minimum 1–2 years of experience in underground utility construction, specifically in a locating or HDD support role.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with HDD locating equipment and an understanding of "clock-face" steering.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to walk for long periods over uneven terrain and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Safety Mindset: Strong knowledge of OSHA safety standards and utility damage prevention protocols.
  • Licensing: Valid Driver’s License (CDL Class A is a significant plus for North Sky roles).

The wage range for Drill Locator is $28.00 - $35.00.
