We're looking for a Principal Hydraulic Engineer to join our growing team in Warrington, Leeds or Cambridge. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the delivery of technically complex hydraulic engineering projects while working alongside recognised industry specialists within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment. You'll play a key role in delivering innovative solutions, strengthening client relationships and supporting the continued growth of our nationally recognised Hydraulic Engineering capability.
As a Principal Hydraulic Engineer, you'll lead the technical delivery of hydraulic engineering studies across a wide range of water infrastructure projects, supporting delivery from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design and construction support.
Your Responsibilities Will Include:
- Leading complex hydraulic studies, including steady state and transient analysis.
- Providing technical guidance on hydraulic structures, pumping systems and conveyance assets.
- Reviewing hydraulic models, calculations and technical reports to ensure engineering excellence.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, Project Managers and clients to develop innovative engineering solutions.
- Mentoring and supporting developing engineers across the Hydraulic Engineering team.
- Building strong relationships with clients while contributing to technical innovation and continuous improvement.

Beyond project delivery, you'll play an important role in developing technical capability across the business by mentoring colleagues, sharing specialist knowledge and driving engineering excellence. Your contribution will help strengthen Stantec's reputation as a trusted partner for complex hydraulic engineering solutions.
About You:
- Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards professional registration.
- Significant experience delivering hydraulic engineering projects within the UK water sector.
- Strong understanding of fluid mechanics, hydraulic structures and transient analysis.
- Experience using hydraulic modelling software such as HADES, VARISM, Flow‑3D or equivalent.
- Experience leading technical delivery across multidisciplinary engineering projects.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience mentoring and supporting developing engineers.
Desirable:
- Experience supporting framework delivery and business development.
- Experience reviewing technical standards and engineering governance.
- Experience working collaboratively with contractors and delivery partners.
- Knowledge of digital engineering tools and modern methods of project delivery.
