Join our 2027 Graduate Programme as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer in our Cambridge office, where you’ll become part of our vibrant Infrastructure team.

About The Role

As a Graduate Mechanical Engineer, you’ll join a team of five mechanical specialists within a multidisciplinary group of around 60 flood and coast engineers, including civil engineers, project managers, and flood modellers. Our mechanical specialists are based across the Southwest, London, and Cambridge, and collaborate closely with electrical engineers in our New Zealand office and modelling colleagues in Pune.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include

  • Supporting the mechanical design and development of flood and coast pumping station projects through key design stages.
  • Working with civil, electrical, modelling, and project management colleagues across the UK and internationally to develop coordinated engineering solutions.
  • Helping design assets that meet the Eels (England and Wales) Regulations 2009, improve energy and carbon performance, and create safer, better working conditions for client operators.

We’ll support your development toward professional registration and chartership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Through our structured graduate training scheme, you’ll be paired with a dedicated mentor and have opportunities to build experience in project management, technical leadership, and discipline specialism, with optional development routes in APEM and NEC contract management.

Your Impact

In this role, your work will help strengthen flood resilience across the UK’s low-lying areas while supporting the recovery of the endangered European eel. You’ll contribute to modernising energy-intensive pumping assets to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption, while improving reliability and working conditions for the client teams who operate them. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to major projects, including Hobhole Pumping Station at RIBA Stage 4; Immingham and Mawmbride pumping stations; the Ely group of pumping stations; and the Littleport and Downham pumping station programme.

About You

At Stantec, we value your potential as much as your experience. Alongside a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and a keen interest in sustainable infrastructure, you will be:

  • A Perseverer – You stay composed when facing setbacks and approach challenges with confidence and determination.
  • An Adapter – You remain calm in new or changing situations and can move confidently between varied, dynamic tasks.
  • A Focused Individual – You focus on what matters and tune out distractions to perform effectively.
  • A Collaborator – You work well with colleagues across disciplines, locations, and cultures, considering different perspectives to achieve better outcomes.
  • An Eager Learner – You learn from your experiences and the world around you, applying that knowledge to anticipate how situations may develop.

Please note that graduates are expected to work from the office four days per week to ensure sufficient time with their team and the right level of support. Applicants must have the unconditional right to live and work in the UK indefinitely, without limitation.

  • Private medical insurance
  • A range of benefits, including holiday buy and sell, group income protection, and life assurance
