We are recruiting a Building Physics Engineer to help support and grow our national capability to be based in Southwest. Working closely with the senior leadership team, the role will ideally require weekly travel to the Plymouth office.

About The Team: Our Building Physics specialists play a critical role in shaping our design strategy influencing early-stage decisions, driving energy performance, and ensuring our solutions stand up to technical scrutiny. We work across a broad portfolio that includes science & technology, healthcare, education, commercial, transport hubs, and regeneration projects throughout the UK and internationally.

At Stantec, we create the connections that get people and communities moving. Across our Buildings & Sustainability teams, we design high-performing, low-carbon, human-centred environments. Our collaborative culture brings together engineers, designers, modellers and sustainability specialists to deliver buildings that are resilient, efficient, and ready for a net-zero future.

The Opportunity: We are seeking a Building Physics Engineer to contribute technical expertise to building performance and energy modelling projects across the UK. You will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams to optimise building performance and deliver practical, low-carbon design solutions. This is a hands-on technical role suited to someone developing deeper experience in building physics, dynamic modelling, and sustainable design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Delivery: Contribute to building physics workstreams on projects, including thermal, energy, daylight, overheating, natural ventilation, and comfort analysis. Assist in developing, reviewing, and optimising energy strategies, operational energy assessments (TM54), and low-carbon design solutions. Support the assessment of façade performance, passive design strategies, solar control, and building fabric optimisation. Ensure compliance with UK regulations (Part L, TM52/TM59, EPC) and contribute to BREEAM, WELL, or LEED credits. Produce technical reports and communicate findings clearly to internal teams and clients.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside MEP, architecture, sustainability, and digital engineering teams to integrate building physics principles into design solutions. Provide input on early-stage design decisions including massing, orientation, glazing ratios, shading, and natural ventilation feasibility. Support adoption of digital modelling workflows and best practices across projects.
  • Mentoring & Knowledge Sharing: Receive guidance and support from senior engineers while contributing to the development of junior team members. Participate in internal knowledge-sharing sessions, workshops, and technical learning initiatives.

About You:

Essential: Experience in building physics, energy modelling, or building performance analysis within a consultancy environment. Proficiency with IES-VE (or equivalent) including simulation, calibration, and QA. Strong technical understanding of passive design, low-carbon buildings, façade performance, and building environmental behaviour. Ability to deliver multi-disciplinary projects and clearly present technical information to teams.

Desirable: Exposure to net-zero carbon strategies, operational energy modelling, heat decarbonisation, or embodied carbon analysis. Familiarity with parametric modelling, digital workflows, or automation tools. Experience assisting or mentoring junior engineers.

Qualifications: Degree (BEng/BSc, ideally MSc/MEng) in Building Physics, Mechanical/Environmental Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or related field. Chartership (CEng) via CIBSE, IMechE, or equivalent is desirable but not essential at this level.
