The water sector is at a turning point. Ageing infrastructure, rising environmental expectations and the push toward net zero are driving one of the most significant periods of investment and innovation the industry has seen. The engineers helping to shape that transition, designing the pumping stations, treatment plants and conveyance systems that communities depend on, are doing some of the most consequential work in the built environment right now.
At Stantec, we're looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our water team, with this role open across our Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh offices. It's an exciting moment to come on board - our mechanical engineering teams across these locations are growing, tackling a broad scope of water and wastewater challenges both locally and nationally, and there's real opportunity to develop your career alongside the work.
About the Role
You'll be involved across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design and construction support, including site surveys and investigations. In practice, that means leading mechanical design on infrastructure and non‑infrastructure projects: water and wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, conveyance systems and more - while working closely with project managers, technical leaders, clients, contractors, supply chain partners and other stakeholders to deliver strong outcomes. You'll be part of a close‑knit, collaborative team supported by experienced technical leaders, and you'll have the opportunity to contribute to the mentorship and development of more junior engineers as your own career progresses. For the right person, there is also scope to take on line management responsibilities in time.
Your Impact
The mechanical systems you design will sit at the core of infrastructure that treats and moves water for communities across the UK. A well‑engineered pumping station, a carefully designed treatment process, a conveyance system that performs reliably under pressure – these aren't abstract achievements. They're the foundations of clean water supply and effective wastewater management, and the decisions made at the design stage echo through decades of operation. Your work here will matter in the most practical sense.
About You
You hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, and you have hands‑on experience of detailed design within the water industry. Experience working for or alongside delivery contractors would be a real advantage, giving you an understanding of how design decisions translate on site. You're ideally working toward Chartered status or already hold it, and you bring a collaborative, considered approach to your work. You're ready to take on greater technical responsibility and contribute meaningfully to a team that takes both the quality of its engineering and the development of its people seriously.
Benefits
- Competitive salary
- Bonus schemes
- Enhanced pension plan
- Annual leave with the option to buy/sell additional days
- Private medical insurance
- Group income protection & life assurance included as standard
- Discounted gym membership
- Hybrid / Flexible working
Enjoy a healthy work‑life balance with our hybrid approach to flexible working.
