SQS is a family run company that has grown into a leading reinstatement and surfacing solutions provider in London, the Home Counties, and the South East. With a 20-year track record in providing high-quality reinstatement and highways maintenance services, SQS continues to be at the forefront of quality, innovation, and performance in the industry.
We are recruiting for our 2025/26 Apprentices to complete the Highways and Maintenance Apprenticeship with SQS. The scheme lasts for at least 1 year and 1 week, including a 3-week initial training program at our London depot. The remaining training comprises 80% on-the-job training at designated depots and 20% off-the-job training at our London depot. On-the-job training involves working with bituminous materials, paved surfaces, back-fill, and spoil removal with our highways reinstatement teams.
Apprentices will be recruited on a fixed-term basis, with the duration depending on course completion, but expected to be at least a year and 1 week. Successful apprentices will have opportunities for full-time roles with SQS. This is a great opportunity to join a fast-growing business. We are looking for candidates with the following skills, experience, and attitude:
Responsibilities:
- Understand and follow SQS Safe Work Procedures to ensure safety.
- Excavate holes and trenches in the public highway, complying with legislation.
- Install street ironwork.
- Search for and mark underground services.
- Implement workplace health, safety, welfare, and environmental standards.
- Operate powered tools and equipment safely.
- Implement signing, lighting, and guarding legislation.
- Contribute to productive working practices.
- Reinstate excavation and highway surfaces to specifications.
- Record work activities using electronic devices.
- Assist with vehicle and plant checks.
Skills and Experience:
- Act and behave safely.
- Take responsibility for work and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Work within SQS Safe Systems of Work.
- Ensure work is accurate, timely, and meets standards.
- Possess basic practical skills.
- Have basic numeracy and literacy skills.
- Understand health and safety principles.
- Display responsibility and maturity.
- Communicate effectively and have good personal skills.
- Be at least 18 years old, hold a full driving license for at least a year, and have access to a vehicle.
