The predicted salary is between 6 - 10 £ per hour.

Main purpose of the role: Responsible for operating various machines within the manufacturing cells, including changeovers, machine condition and setting, whilst working safely and maintaining quality against the standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all aspects of setting, condition setting for jobs and condition alteration to remedy quality issues.
  • Expected to work on own initiative and use own judgment in absence of technician.
  • Always compliant with RA/SOPs/work standards etc associating with each process.
  • Responsible for maintaining department KPI’s (5s, scrap reduction, inventory, safety and productivity) to factory set targets for the department with increased responsibility for designated equipment.
  • Responsible for daily/weekly asset care checks on all machinery and recording for maintenance records.
  • Completion of all relevant safety and quality checks throughout the process in accordance with Stanley Black and Decker Safety and Quality standards.
  • Manufacture a range of products/parts to the required standard, ready for use by other departments or third-party affiliates.
  • Ensuring all work produced is to the required standard by hourly visual inspection, accurately recording of scrap generated.
  • Assist in the maintenance of department tooling and equipment, identify and where possible remedy minor repairs to machinery.
  • Carry out all duties necessary to achieve department goals, production targets and forecasts.
  • Will be required occasionally to assist the Technicians in other duties.
  • To ensure integrity of production; must have a flexible approach to shift working and overtime, which may include weekend cover during production peaks, colleague holidays and periods of absence.
  • Adhering to site health & safety protocols.
  • To carry out general duties when requested to do so.

Working Conditions: Normal manufacture conditions may also come into contact with heat, fumes, dust, oil and water when tool changing. Occasional use of a step ladder may be required when carrying out machine repairs, changeovers etc.

Physical Effort: Standing or walking 90% of time. Loading tools, materials into machine using a crane. Occasionally using step ladders to load material into machines, carrying out repairs and on changeovers. Forklift trucks, pallet trucks and handling equipment are available for lifting and moving if required.

Skills Required:

  • Previous experience of plant operated machines, Grinders, CNC machines, Press, Heat Treatment etc, fork/pallet truck, cranes and lifting equipment.
  • The ability to make adjustments to machines throughout the manufacture process.
  • Experience of the use of measuring equipment, dimensional gauges, plug and dial gauges, visual recognition of defects.
  • To be able to complete accurate weighing & recording of operational scrap.
  • Scrap recording, asset care sheets, shift logbook, changeover sheets.
  • Should have a basic understanding of the use of simple hand tools with a mechanical aptitude.

Experience Required:

  • Working in a Grinding, CNC, Press, Heat treatment environment essential.
  • Setting & fault-finding experience essential.
  • Some level of mechanical engineering apprenticeship preferred but not essential.
  • Forklift truck licence preferred but not essential.
  • Previously worked in an environment of continuous improvement and lean activities.

Length of training required: 6-10 weeks basic, then ongoing development on all tooling and machines which should take up to 12 months depending on experience. Attending internal and external training courses as required.

Supervision of others: Nil, but may be required to assist in the training of others.

Safety of others: Required to know and carry out correct abort procedures in case of equipment failure. Must have safety awareness to keep the environment in a safe and clean condition including machines, equipment and surrounding areas. Care needed when operating Forklift truck and Overhead Cranes. If required would evacuate and alarm other departments affected in the event of fire, fumes or any other risk.
