Key responsibilities and duties:
The Fleetlands Fire and Rescue Service is a uniformed service providing emergency response to operational flying for the Fleetlands HLS and emergency response to the Fleetlands Site including fire/medical and environmental incidents. Members of the Fire and Rescue Service are subject to the documents contained within the Fleetlands Business Management System (BMS), which includes the Fleetlands RFFS Station Manual and Operational Policies/Procedures/Tactics/Techniques, and other locally agreed documents such as Risk Assessments, Station Notices, Operational Updates and Safety Notices. The job holder must comply with various publications, which include DSA-DFSR-02 – Defence Aerodrome Rescue & Firefighting (ARFF) Regulations, CAP 699, National Occupational Standards and the HQ DFRMO Directive HRD 08/2006 – Medical Standards.
A firefighter is responsible for maintaining themselves at a state of operational readiness for deployment at immediate notice to any fire, emergency incident, medical response that may be encountered during their shift. This may be physically and mentally demanding and in potentially hazardous situations.
Adherence to our Quality Management Systems (QMS), Safety Management Systems (SMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and all associated documents on the Business Management System (BMS).
Competencies:
- Core: Operational Readiness - Ensure that operational appliances and firefighting, medical equipment is ready for use in emergency situations to allow a rapid and safe response.
- Operational Risks - Acquire and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the potential hazards to be found on site and the resources available to enable incidents to be dealt with in the most effective manner.
- Operational Competency - Undergo continuous training and assessment, both technical and physical, to ensure the competency to attend emergency situations is maintained.
- Functional: Health & Safety - Be conversant and comply with on-site Health and Safety implications, take reasonable care of yourself and others affected by your work activities, use equipment correctly, and apply safe working practices effectively, to remove or minimize risk of accident or injury and to meet statutory obligations.
- Dignity at Work - Actively comply with the company Dignity at Work policy to assist in eliminating discrimination and in maintaining a fair, positive and productive working environment, and meeting statutory obligations and good employment practice.
Organisational Relationships:
- Fire Safety: As part of a team, carry out fire safety related tasks at all Standard Aero UK facilities to ensure that all equipment, preventative measures and procedures are in place to create a safe environment for all staff.
- Environmental Protection: Act as Initial Emergency Response to on site spillages and pollution control risks to contain and prevent an impact to the environment. Provide training to staff when required.
- Medical Response: As part of the medical response on-site, provide emergency lifesaving actions and training/information to all on site staff and to other Standard Aero UK facilities where appropriate.
Education delivery: Educate all staff on fire safety, pollution control, fire awareness, manual handling, and any other role related training required to assist the business.
Professional Qualifications/Education and Training:
Essential:
- Recruit (Initial) Firefighter Course/Equivalent - Attendance on an initial Basic Firefighter Course is required so that Fire-fighters are trained to National Occupational Standards and in line with Civil Aviation Publications (CAP) 699 on arrival.
- Driving Licence (Car) - Full Category B – Car Licence.
- Minimum 2-year experience in the Wholetime, Retained Duty System and Aviation Firefighter role - Currently active in Wholetime, Retained Duty System and Aviation Firefighter role or has been active in last 12 months.
- Pass a Firefighter specific medical.
- Complete a Firefighter Carry Test.
- Complete a Chester Walk Test.
- Pass a BPSS site security check.
Desirable:
- Bridging Course (Aviation)/Equivalent - Attendance on a course in order to achieve compliance with CAP 699.
- Breathing Apparatus Wearer Course - Attendance on an initial Breathing Apparatus Wearer Course in order to achieve compliance with CAP 699.
- Driving Licence (Large Vehicles) - Full Category C – Large Vehicle Licence - You can drive vehicles over 3,500kg with a trailer up to 750kg maximum authorised mass (MAM).
- Fire Extinguisher Maintenance/Servicing Qualification.
- Emergency Response Driving/EFAD/ERDT/Equivalent.
- Experience and understanding of Emergency Response Driving.
- Gym Instructor - Recognised Gym Instructor Qualification.
- First Aid at Work/Equivalent - Basic Knowledge and Understanding of First Aid.
- Immediate Emergency Care (IEC)/Equivalent - Advanced Knowledge and Experience in Trauma Care.
- Sector Specific Instructor Qualifications - Any sector specific instructor qualifications (Manual Handling/BAI/First Aid/RTCI).
- Human Factors - Experience of Human Factors in Aviation.
- Airside Driving - Experience driving on an Airside environment.
