Responsible To: Fleet Engineer/Workshop Manager/Chargehand Fitter/Master Technician
Main Purpose of Job: To maintain and repair the Company’s vehicles to a safe and roadworthy condition, employing such skills and knowledge as may be required with due regard to current employment and health and safety legislation.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Test vehicles and diagnose faults.
- Observe, recognise and report on vehicle component defects or symptoms of impending failure.
- Service, adjust and repair vehicles or components using the necessary equipment and tools in a proper and safe manner.
- Examine vehicles completely and report orally and/or in writing upon the condition, roadworthiness and safety.
- Requisition for replacement parts using Manufacturer’s part catalogue.
- Manufacture as required, and within the limitation of machinery and equipment available, simple components.
- Recognise repairs that need specialist skills.
- Assess and cost repairs (in certain cases).
- Perform any ancillary duties which may be required from time to time.
- Record all work done and time taken on each job in the paperwork form required.
- To drive Company vehicles when necessary, providing the post holder has the necessary licence to do so.
- Attend vehicle breakdowns/accidents etc. for Stagecoach North East or any other organisation when necessary as and when requested by management.
- On the basis that a vehicle has been reported to be defective by an employee, a Service Technician is expected to undertake repairs on a vehicle which may be of another discipline, i.e. a small body and electrical repair, which Management consider are within his/her capabilities i.e., replace broken wing mirrors, replace light bulbs etc.
- If vehicles are defective in the morning or evening period outside normal working hours or at weekends every effort should be made by the Service Technician to repair the vehicle/vehicles and make it available for service.
- If a breakdown occurs near the end of a Service Technician’s shift then he/she would be expected to attend the breakdown/accident although it may take him/her over his/her normal finishing time.
- In addition to the foregoing the post holder will be expected to carry out any additional duties as directed by Supervisors/management which are deemed to be within the post holder’s capabilities.
