Staffordshire Police are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Police Driver Trainer (Driver Training) to join our Learning & Organisational Development team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced driver trainer to contribute directly to officer safety, public safety and public confidence through the delivery of high-quality police driver training.

About the Role

The post-holder will demonstrate capability and experience in the design and delivery of engaging driver training programmes, supporting police officers and staff to develop safe, lawful and effective driving skills. Training delivery will cover Basic, Response and Advanced Police Driving Authority Levels (subject to authorisation) and will be delivered in line with:

  • Authorised Professional Practice (APP)
  • National Occupational Standards
  • Roads Policing and Police Driving Learning Programme (RPPDLP)
  • Police Driving Prescribed Training Regulations

Responsibilities

  • Police driver training to officers and staff, up to and including Advanced Driving level
  • Coaching and mentoring to develop safe driving behaviours and effective risk management
  • Continuous assessment and structured feedback to support learner development
  • Training that promotes best practice in line with APP, national guidance and force policy
  • Support to the wider Learning & Organisational Development team to meet operational and organisational priorities

Location

This post is based at the Driver Training Unit, Hydrant Way, Stafford, ST18 0DD, but there may be a requirement to visit other training facilities within the force and region. Full Driving Licence required.

Essential Requirements

  • Been trained to and attained Response Driver authority within a UK Police Service or equivalent emergency service, with recent operational experience
  • Or be a qualified and registered DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) with recent instructional experience
  • A strong understanding of learning and development processes
  • Experience of coaching and mentoring individuals and groups
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Competence in Microsoft Office and digital learning technologies

Assessment and Selection

Shortlisted candidates will be required to undertake a practical driving assessment. Successful candidates will then be invited to a competency-based interview focusing on instructional capability, experience and professional values, and will be asked to present a short 10-minute presentation on a selected topic that will be advised.

Training and Development

  • Complete College of Policing Training Essentials Programme (TEP) (if not already held)
  • Achieve and maintain Advanced Police Driver standards
  • Successfully complete a Police Driving Instructor course

Confirmation in post will be subject to successful completion of all required training within six months of appointment.
