The Specialist Teaching Support Service is seeking to appoint a qualified Specialist Teacher of the Deaf to work within the Deaf / Hearing Inclusion Team, required for September 2026 or January 2027. Hours are 26 hours (0.8 FTE). The days and hours can be flexible to meet the needs of the successful candidate and the service. This is a peripatetic post with a caseload of Deaf children and young people in a range of settings within the geographical area of Staffordshire (currently Newcastle‑under‑Lyme/Staffordshire Moorlands).
Package Description
- Salary: Teachers' Pay Scale, Main/Upper Pay Scale PLUS SEN allowance
- Hours: Part‑time (0.8 FTE) – 26 hours per week. Days and hours can be flexible to meet the needs of the successful candidate and the service.
Main Responsibilities
- Support Deaf children and young people and their families in homes, mainstream settings, and specialist settings across the age range 0–25.
- Support the educational development and inclusion of the children referred to the team.
- Monitor, deliver interventions, and advise on an allocated caseload; relevant experience and understanding of statutory assessment and EHCPs would be advantageous.
The Ideal Candidate
- Have experience of multi‑agency working and confidence in advising, supporting, and making sound judgements on strategies to meet the needs of children.
- Be highly organised and able to demonstrate effective and positive interpersonal and communication skills to build and maintain relationships with schools and partners.
- Have the ability to use specialist technology associated with educational audiology for Deaf students and work closely with the team around the child to ensure equipment is used effectively and outcomes achieved.
- Be willing to travel around Staffordshire; must have driving licence, car ownership, or reasonable adjustments for disabled applicants.
- Hold a qualification in British Sign Language; if not held, commitment to self‑fund BSL Level 2 (Signature Accredited) is required.
- Possibly an outstanding teacher with experience in working with pupils with SEND and recent classroom teaching experience, willing to commit to the 2‑year mandatory qualification – Qualified Teacher of the Deaf (QTOD).
