Overview
An exciting opportunity for a dedicated and experienced street lighting design engineer to join the Street Lighting team at Staffordshire County Council.
The team manages approximately 108,000 street lighting assets across Staffordshire to ensure roads and footways are safe and accessible for road users and communities.
Assets include street lighting columns, subway lighting, illuminated road signs and bollards, 20mph school signs, and related equipment on the highway.
The team is involved in ensuring that new street lighting assets on developments and road improvements meet the correct standards and are properly installed.
The County Council is investing in changing approximately 14,000 existing street lighting heads to LED heads, delivering energy savings, reduced carbon emissions, lower maintenance requirements, and improved lighting for road users and communities.
The team delivers maintenance through its PFI contract with E.
ON (ends May 2028), and works closely with Amey LG, the highway department’s strategic delivery partner.

Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design and delivery of street lighting assets and improvements, ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
- Assist with the assessment and installation of new street lighting assets on developments and road schemes.
- Support the LED head replacement programme (approximately 14,000 heads) to achieve energy savings and improved lighting.
- Collaborate with contractors, developers, local communities, and delivery partners (PFI provider E. ON and Amey LG) to deliver high-quality services.
- Assist with maintenance planning and operations under the PFI contract, with awareness of contract timelines (ends May 2028).
- Contribute to continuous network improvement and carbon reduction initiatives.
- Engage in training and development opportunities to build expertise in highway lighting.
- Flexibility for occasional evening and weekend work as required.

Location: Stafford with potential for home working. Evening and weekend work may be required.
